Chapter 12
Chapter 12
Lucas hesitated for a moment.
Respect. That was the word.
Since marrying Lucas, he had never once shown me respect.
Every time I was emotional, he saw it as me caring too much about him. But when I stopped caring, he accused me of being difficult.
Lucas ignored Dr. Harrison and grabbed my arm. "Olivia, let's go."
I didn't want to cause a scene in front of my supervisor, so I turned to Dr. Harrison. "Dr. Harrison, I'm sorry. Thank you for stepping in. I apologize you had to witness this..."
But Lucas was in such a rush to drag me away that he didn't even let me finish speaking.
He shoved me into the car and spent the entire ride simmering with anger, as if I was the one who had come all the way here to apologize to him.
I didn't say anything. Whatever.
We arrived at an apartment Lucas had rented, a place far nicer than my dorm. As soon as we got inside, Lucas began washing vegetables and cooking, acting like nothing had happened. "Olivia, sit down for a bit, or take a shower first. I'll call you when the food's ready."
His mother had once told me that Lucas had never been allowed in the kitchen growing up, he'd never even washed a dish, let alone cooked.
"This son of mine has been spoiled by our entire family," she'd said. "Now that you're married to him, you need to take good care of him."
She always implied I should feel lucky to have him. And Lucas never once stood up for me in front of his parents.
I didn't bother taking a shower. I just sat on the couch, scrolling through my phone. That's when I saw Jessica's post on Instagram:
"Always wanted to settle down in Ocean City. Big thanks to Lily's dad for the special gift of a villa."
Jessica went abroad? Did she reconcile with her ex-husband?
So Lucas had really quit his job and came here just to try to fix things with me?
It made my stomach churn.
I glanced at Lucas, still busy in the kitchen, and felt nothing but indifference. No sadness. No anger. Just... nothing.
The next day at work, Dr. Harrison asked if I was doing okay.
I shook my head. "No issues."
As he was about to leave, I hesitated for a moment. "Dr. Harrison, thank you for yesterday. Actually, Lucas and I are discussing divorce, but don't worry, it won't affect my work."
His expression softened slightly, but he simply nodded. "Okay."
Over the next few days, Lucas showed up every day to pick me up from work and cook for me.
That was all he did. He just hovered around me, trying to make up for everything.
"Olivia, I just want to take care of you."
"If you don't like eggplant, I won't buy it next time."
"Olivia, don't leave tonight, okay?"
He begged me countless times, but I still chose to sleep in the dorm.
One evening, he blocked my door, tried to lean in for a kiss, and said, "Olivia, please don't do this. I'll admit I was wrong. Why does it have to come to a divorce? Is it because of Dr. Harrison? What exactly is going on between you two?"
His voice was full of panic, and he started throwing out wild accusations.
