Chapter 8
Chapter 8
"Ms. Sinclair, don't worry. We'll help you get a divorce."
Pamela was dumbfounded.
"Wait, weren't you supposed to help me get justice?"
The host gave a signal with her eyes.
The cameraman directly turned off the camera.
He said to Pamela, "You've gone too far. Your son did such terrible things, and instead of making amends, you're here trying to twist the facts."
I found the cameraman's words quite agreeable.
I realized I had misjudged this program team. They really were trying to solve problems for the public.
With the host's help, my reputation was quickly restored.
I also returned to work at my company.
Pamela, however, became infamous online.
Surprisingly, Mark stepped forward at this time.
He said his relationship with Pamela was true love, and he was planning to divorce his wife to marry Pamela.
After seeing this video, all I could do was respect their decision and wish them well.
The two of them actually gained some popularity because of this incident, and their follower count increased rapidly.
With the help of the Community Help Team, I finally divorced Connor.
Connor was quickly sentenced to three years in prison.
When he heard the verdict, Connor broke down in tears on the stand, saying he deeply regretted his actions.
Whether his regret was genuine or not, only he knew.
Caldwellfe finally returned to normal.
Just when I thought I'd never hear about Connor again, my dad told me one day that something had happened to him.
I asked what had occurred.
It turned out that prisoners were allowed to watch TV, and they happened to see the episode of the Community Help Team featuring me and Pamela.
Soon, everyone knew why Connor was in prison.
In prison, inmates who beat women were considered the most despicable.
So the other prisoners often targeted him.
Their methods were quite dirty, and the prison was full of hardened criminals. Things got a bit out of hand.
"How bad was it?" I asked.
"Nothing too serious, just that he can't have children anymore."
Hearing this news, I thought it wasn't really a big deal, since Connor always believed he couldn't have children anyway.
But I couldn't help feeling a bit of schadenfreude.
Just after learning about Connor's situation, I came across another video of Pamela complaining.
In the video, she said Mark had used her to make money, got her pregnant, and now that the child was older, Mark had run off with his ex-wife.
I realized then that Pamela had never actually married Mark.
Many of those videos online had been scripted.
No matter how much Pamela complained, Mark had fled abroad and wasn't responding to any of this.
The incident caused quite a stir. Some people cursed Mark, some cursed Pamela.
But most people were just glad these two had finally disappeared from the internet.
The next news I heard about Connor was two years later.
That day, as I was leaving for work and had just reached the parking lot, he walked straight towards me.
When I saw him, I thought my eyes were playing tricks on me.
After three years, he had lost a lot of weight.
He looked very haggard.
As soon as I saw him, I turned to run.
But he caught up with me.
"Emma."
"Don't hit me!" I cried.
The moment he touched me, my whole body broke out in goosebumps.
"Emma, I'm not going to hit you. This is for you."
Surprisingly, Connor didn't do anything extreme. Instead, he handed me a card.
"What's this?" I asked.
"It's compensation for you and the child. I wish you happiness."
I looked at the card, feeling a bit lost.
Two hours later, my dad called to tell me Connor was dead.
It turned out that after Connor was released from prison, he went home and saw the child his mother had with Mark.
The child looked too much like Mark.
Connor had always believed Mark had ruined his life. Seeing this child and learning what had happened in the past three years, he lost control and hit the child.
The one-year-old child's spine was broken. Although the child didn't die, they would be bedridden for life.
Pamela, trying to protect the child, also took a few punches and was now in the hospital taking care of the baby.
At first, Connor didn't call the police, telling the doctors they had been robbed.
He sold his house and car, using half the money to pay for the child's surgery fees.
The other half... no one knew where it went.
This morning, my dad and his team had uncovered Connor's actions and were preparing to formally arrest him.
But they found Connor by the riverside instead.
The call ended.
I looked at the card in my hand, feeling conflicted.
When I divorced Connor, to speed up the process, I had left with nothing, not asking for any property.
I never expected Connor would have a conscience on his deathbed.
He had actually given me money.
In the end, I decided to keep this money.
After all, it was what Connor owed me.
(The End)
