Chapter 9
Chapter 9
I rushed over and encountered the young man at the door.Entering the room, I saw Vivien collapsed on the bed, surrounded by people. The groom, looking even more unsightly, seemed oblivious and was grinning.Emeline was trying to stop the commotion. But she appeared disheveled with some of her jewelry missing.I realized this was a wedding prank gone out of hand. The young man, seemingly taken aback by the turn of events, quickly pushed through the crowd.Vivien's wedding dress was broken and she hugged herself, her face deathly pale.I grabbed a blanket from the bed to cover her. She was trembling and screamed hoarsely."I'm calling the police! I'm calling the police on you all!"The ringleader, exposing a set of yellow teeth, chuckled."Hey, this is the first time I've heard of calling the cops over a wedding prank. Go ahead, see if the police care."The men around him laughed along.Yellow Teeth pulled the groom over, pushing him to kiss the bride.Vivien screamed in terror, hiding in my arms."This is really something. Why was she avoiding from her own husband? Who can explain this?""He's not my husband! Get away from me! All of you, get away!"Vivien was hysterical, her hair disheveled, her eyes were full of anger. The men in the room exchanged looks.Yellow Teeth smirked, his eyes full of mockery."You're not trying to scam us, are you? How come this guy's so lucky, marrying such a young bride at his age?"Vivien continued sobbing.I stood up, trying to smooth things over."Gentlemen, you've got it all wrong. My sister is just not familiar with your customs here and got scared. She's still young! How about the host offers you all a few more drinks while I calm her down?"I signaled to the young man with my eyes. He promptly called everyone out of the room, taking the groom with him.Vivien, engulfed in her misery, hadn't noticed the young man leaving. The room quieted down.I shut the door and bent down to pick up the scattered jewelry.Emeline sat by the bed in frustration."What kind of a disaster it is!"Vivien's eyes were full of hatred."I want to call the police. I must call the police!"I sneered, looking at the mother and daughter."Call the police? And tell them what? That you were deceived?"Vivien looked up at me, unwilling to back down, "Am I supposed to just endure this? How can I let this go after such humiliation?"I smirked, my tone laced with sarcasm."You decided to play this role, so you can complain about this. You dragged your mom into this mess despite my warnings. But you wouldn't listen, would you?""Sure, you can call the police and accuse them of pranking. But that would expose your scam too. Those people were invited, and the host gave us a deposit. It won't be easy to resolve then."Emeline tried to calm her down and persuaded her."Vivien, let's just leave this be. Let's go home, take a nice shower, and forget about it."Vivien's face grew paler.I felt a sense of satisfaction.Back then, I was in the same dilemma and even accused of being a kidnapper. Now, it was their turn to feel helpless.I pulled out a set of clothes from my bag and handed them to Vivien."Change into these. We'll leave soon."Not until the guests had dispersed late into the night, I managed to take Vivien and Emeline back home.On the way, Emeline repeatedly thanked her lucky stars that I had driven a car.Vivien remained silent the entire way.I took a quick glance at the dress earlier. That expensive trailing wedding dress was now beyond repair, pearls and rhinestones scattered everywhere, with the back laces snapped. It was essentially ruined.Emeline's rented clothes and jewelry were also damaged.Vivien now faced a hefty compensation. The deposit and final payment from the client were nowhere near enough to cover the costs. She ended up losing more than she gained.
