Chapter 2
Chapter 2
I stopped in my tracks before turning to look at her. “To be honest, babe …I have no idea.”
The waiting room of the imaging center was crowded. The chairs were all filled and multiple people stood about - some pregnant, some injured. Dane shifted in his seat next tome and said, “I’m going to go stand near the wall.”
Turning to look into his crystal blue eyes, I asked, “Why?
Motioning with his hand towards a pregnant woman, and a man whose leg was in a cast, he answered, “Because I feel bad that nothing is wrong with me and I’m taking a chair from one of those people.”
“Well, then I’ll stand with you.”
Soft laughter escaped his lips when he turned his head to glare at me. “No you won’t. You’re pregnant. You’ll sit right there until your name is called.”
A smile creased his lips and my thighs clenched together. Dane was good tome in many ways, but he couldn’t deny that he enjoyed bossing me around every once in a while. At first I’d fought against it, but that’s the thing with alphas: you either learn to accept that they’re in charge, or you fight constantly.
I chose not to fight. I didn’t have it in me to go up against Dane every damn day. He was too stubborn and the effort would have been exhausting.
“Dane, I’m not as big as the other women who are standing. I’m barely showing. It’s no problem for me to stand.”
I pushed up from the chair, but his hand landed on my shoulder, shoving me back into my seat. I glared at him and he laughed. “You’re cute when you’re angry, you know that?”
Taking in a deep breath, I opened my mouth to let him have it, to assert myself and tell him how it was going to be, but luckily I didn’t have to.
“Luna Matthews?” A nurse called from aside door.
Pointing my finger in Dane’s face, I smiled and said, “You’re lucky. I was just about to give you an earful about bossing me around.”
Dane released my shoulder and stood up beside me. As we approached the nurse, he leaned over and whispered in my ear. “You can save that earful you were going to give me for when we’re in bed later tonight. I love it when you argue.”
His hand slapped my butt and I jumped, my cheeks flaming with embarrassment as we walked through the side door to follow the nurse down a hall.
Dane and I sat in the exam room waiting for the technician to come in and perform the ultrasound. I sat on the table scrolling through the latest gossip posted on my social media site as Dane paced the floors.
“Would you quit walking back and forth? You’re making me dizzy,” I complained.
Danespun on his heel to look at me. “I can’t help it. I’m really excited to find out what we’re having. Aren’t you?”
I shrugged my shoulder and clicked the button to turnoff my phone. “I don’t know. I’ll be happy with whatever it is. Maybe we should do the old fashion thing and not find out. It could be a surprise when he or she is born.”
Stepping up tome, he grabbed my legs and jerked me down the table. I locked my legs around his waist and threw my arms around his shoulders. Our eyes met and a shiver ran along my spine.
“Hey there, sexy. Fancy meeting you here,” I teased.
A grin pulled at one side of his mouth. “I know. It’s weird, isn’t it? Every time I imagined having to drive you somewhere for a pregnancy, I always thought I’d be laughing because some other poor bastard had been the one to knock you up.”
My jaw dropped at his joke, but that didn’t mean I didn’t laugh at what he said. “You’re a jerk.” “You like it.”
The door to the room opened and in walked a buxom brunette who was wearing way too much makeup and who needed to button up her uniform a bit higher in order to keep her tits from falling out. Dane’s entire body tensed as soon as he turned around and saw her. Something about her was familiar, but I couldn’t place where I’d seen her before.
That was, until she spoke.
The high-pitched, raspy voice was unmistakable. It was the same voice I heard on a night spent with a pillow over my head, a pillow that wasn’t anywhere near thick enough to drown out the moans and squeals, or the way Dane’s name was screamed
from her lips. “Holy. Shit.”
Her eyes widened when Dane released me and turned around to face her fully. “Uh …” He stammered. “Hey.”
Her eyes met mine and I saw the recognition filter in, a bit of relief withering her shoulders when she realized it was Dane’s stepsister who was sitting on the exam table.
Annoyance filtered through my veins at first, but I sat back with a stupid grin on my face. It would be amusing to see Dane wiggle his way out of this one.
