Chapter 4
Chapter 4
“I’m not a doctor,” she answered, “But I talk to a lot of pregnant women. Some of them do feel the baby at twenty weeks, but there are also others who don’t. I think it just comes down to the way the baby is positioned and its size. I wouldn’t worry if I were you. Every pregnancy is different.”
Her words made me feel better …and more like a jerk for screwing with her.
Looking over at Dane, I frowned when I saw the reverent look on his face. Here this man was looking at his child for the first time, and all I could do was rub the awkward situation with his ex-whatever she was into his face.
“Do you want to know what your baby is going to be?” I asked as I reached out to take his hand. He nodded yes without stripping his love-filled eyes from the monitor.
Marcia glanced in our direction, her jaw hanging open in response to what I’d just revealed. “Dane? Dane is the father?”
I nodded and said, “Ye she is. And if you don’t mind, would you please let him know what he’s having without letting me hear it. Although I want it to be a surprise, I can’t refuse letting him know what Bean is while he has the chance.”
“You’re really not going to tell me?”
Driving back from what had to be the most awkward ultrasound in my life, I sat in the passenger’s seat with a full belly after eating at a diner near the imaging center.
Dane glanced over at me from behind the wheel, immediately looking back towards the road before saying, “You didn’t want to know. So I’m not telling you. If you wanted to know, you should have asked while we were there.”
A scowl took over my face, my arms crossing over my chest so that I resembled a petulant child. “Not fair. I didn’t feel comfortable asking your ex-girlfriend to tell me about Bean.”
His lips curled at the ends and I knew he was enjoying this. “First off, she wasn’t my ex-girlfriend. She was a girl I’d taken home from the club …once. That’s it. Her voice alone was enough to ensure I never took her home again.”
I glared at him and he chuckled.
“ Second, you had no problem pretending like I wasn’t the father of the child for most of the appointment, which means you were enjoying the fact that I was uncomfortable a little too much. Since you had so much fun torturing me, I now get to enjoy torturing you. Karma is a bitch, Luna.”
Dammit. He had me and he knew it. There was noway to argue with him and force him to give me the info. He was too stubborn for that.
Reaching over, I brushed my fingers over his muscular thigh, gripping the muscle with my palm as I scooted my hand up towards his cock. My eyes were pinned to his face, his expression shifting from one of humor to desire.
“What are you doing, woman?” He asked with a husky note to his voice.
Giving my voice all the seduction I could muster, I answered, “Trying to find another way of making you tell me what Bean is going to be.”
His hands gripped the wheel, his hips bucking forward when my hand came in contact with his zipper. “You know …” I said, as I fiddled with his belt to loosen it. “ … I could have you completely finished by the time we pull into the driveway. And then …”
He reached down and grabbed my hand, pulling it from where I gripped his belt to place it back in my lap. Shoving me back so that I fully in my seat, he said, “I’m driving and that’s not safe.”
Laughter bubbled up from my chest. “ Since when do you care about safety?”
His eyes caught the sunlight when he looked at me, sapphires sparkling between the smile lines that creased the skin around his eyes. “ Since my child sleeps in your belly.” Pressing his palm against my stomach, he said, “We have to grow up, Luna. Part of that process is learning not to take risks that could hurt Bean.”
Pride swelled in my heart – pride that the man I was with, the man I’d hated and rejected only six months ago, was becoming an amazing father.
“Fair enough,” I said, sitting back in my seat and staring at the side of his beautiful face. “But when we get home, all bets are
off. As soon as you turn off the car’s ignition, I’m getting that information out of you.” Laughter shook his shoulders. “Are you using sex against me?”
“You better damn well believe it, mister. I want to know more about Bean.”
The moment between us couldn’t have been more perfect. Not an ounce of negativity existed inside me. I was in a place where I could clearly see my future – and I liked what I saw.
