Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Two days later, I went to Kayne's house. I hadn't packed my things yet, so I needed to return the key. I saw on the news that he had a show, so I figured it was a good time to go while he wasn't home. But to my surprise, he came back earlier than expected.
Kayne rushed into the house like he knew I was there. Without hesitation, he went straight to the bedroom.
"Olivia!"
There was a loud bang as he slammed the bedroom door. When he saw the luggage in my hand, his expression went from confusion to shock.
"Olivia, what are you doing?"
I took a deep breath. "I'm sorry. I didn't know you were home," I said, placing the keys on the table. "Here are the keys."
Kayne stared at me, his eyes darkening. "I'm asking you, what are you doing? Olivia, why are you packing your things?"
I met his gaze, unflinching. "We've broken up. Isn't it normal for me to pack my things?"
He grabbed my hands, forcing me to look at him. His face still had bruises from the fight with Thomas. His expression was a mix of worry and desperation.
"I didn't agree to break up," he said, his voice trembling. "Olivia, can we please not break up? I was wrong. It's my fault, and I admit it. Please, don't leave me."
The desperation in his voice was unlike anything I'd ever heard from him before, but it didn't change anything. I had already made up my mind.
"Kayne, you're not a kid anymore. Why can't you accept this?" I said, pulling my hands from his grip.
He held me tightly. "I know you're angry. You said you loved me, but why are you breaking up with me now? You're lying, Olivia. You're doing this to get a reaction, right? You want me to beg for your attention?"
He hugged me tighter, his words coming faster. "Olivia, you win. I can't sleep without you. Please, move back in. Please don't go."
I stood there in silence, not pushing him away but not returning his embrace either. I repeated my words, firm and steady.
"Kayne, wake up. It's over."
He buried his face in my neck, refusing to let go. The move to a new lab was a huge project, and we'd been so busy with preparations. But on the day I was heading to the airport, Kayne showed up again.
He stopped me in the terminal, grabbing my luggage with one hand, not letting go.
"Olivia, please don't go."
His voice was pleading. "You don't like Freya, and I've already cut contact with her. I deleted everything. Can you give me another chance? Please trust me. Don't leave."
I couldn't bring myself to respond. He wouldn't let go, and all I could do was stand there, my heart heavy with the weight of everything we'd been through.
