Chapter 2
Chapter 2
I called a technician to help me change the light bulb, but it turned out I didn't need Kayne's help after all. Once I saw him off, I got a call from my mentor.
"Olivia, have you thought about what I mentioned last time? You've been out of school for a few years now, but I still remember you. I'm getting old, and I understand if you don't want to stay in touch, but this opportunity is rare. I want to talk to you again. If you miss it, I'd feel bad for you."
I had studied artificial intelligence in college, and my mentor had always valued me. Under his guidance, I won several awards for his projects, and he always believed I'd end up in the industry after graduation. But unexpectedly, I didn't. Kayne thought dealing with robots all day was boring, so I gave up my degree for him. I always put his happiness first, doing whatever he liked. But no matter how much I tried to please him, he was never satisfied.
"Olivia, think about it carefully. Your senior is leading this project. I've learned about it, and it's a very mature idea. It's going to have a huge market share in the future. If you're willing, you could do really well."
My mentor kept pushing, worried I'd give up again. But now, I'd finally come to a realization.
"Sir, I understand. I'm willing to give it a try. Thank you so much."
My mentor was thrilled. "I'll give you his contact information. Get in touch with him."
I had once considered Kayne the most important person in my world, living my life almost completely for him. But thankfully, I woke up before it was too late. Now, I had the chance to find myself again.
I reached out to the project leader, who quickly sent over the project details. He asked me to go through them as soon as possible. The lab might be relocating soon, and he was looking for a new space. The old one was still in use, so he suggested I familiarize myself with the equipment whenever I had free time.
Kayne came back late that night. I was so absorbed in the documents that I didn't hear the door open.
"Why didn't you answer your phone? I thought you weren't home," he said, pushing the door open. I snapped out of my thoughts.
"I didn't hear it. Maybe I had it muted."
It had become a habit of mine. I didn't like being interrupted by phone rings when studying, but after meeting Kayne, I'd changed that habit, always afraid he might suddenly need me.
"Did you mute it all night?" he snapped, walking toward me, his anger obvious.
