Chapter 10
Chapter 10
No one knew exactly what happened to the usually composed, buttoned-up Luke Williams on the day of his engagement party. But one thing was certain, everyone had been waiting for the big announcement.
His engagement to Fiona.
It never came.
Instead, the glittering celebration ended in confusion, the air thick with unanswered questions and forced smiles. Guests murmured among themselves as the atmosphere turned from festive to awkward in a heartbeat.
Fiona, in her floor-length gown and heels that now felt far too high, hesitantly approached Luke. His face was unreadable, cold, distant.
"Luke, what's going on?" she asked, her voice tight with nerves.
He didn't respond. Didn't even look at her.
Clutching a simple cream-colored envelope in one hand, he walked right past her and out of the room, his pace steady and purposeful. The kind of walk you take when you've made up your mind.
Fiona stumbled after him, her voice cracking as she tried to keep up. "Luke! This is our engagement party! Where are you going?!"
But he was gone, physically, mentally, emotionally, long before she even finished the sentence.
Inside that envelope was a letter. It wasn't long, but it hit like a punch to the chest.
"Wishing Mr. Williams and my aunt happiness.
The Rosalie you knew has grown and must now leave.
Thank you for your care over the years. I'm deeply grateful."
That was all.
Luke stood frozen as he read it, the words playing over and over in his head like a broken record. A chill crept in, hollow and terrifying.
He stormed into Rosalie's room, half-expecting to find her still there.
But the space was almost untouched, eerily still, like she'd vanished into thin air.
The gifts he'd bought her over the years, each one expensive and carefully selected, were left behind in perfect order, as if they never meant anything at all.
Her closet? Nearly empty.
The faint scent of her perfume still lingered in the air.
On the floor sat the small, weathered box filled with trinkets she'd once given him, handmade crafts from her childhood, silly little keepsakes, and that heart-shaped gemstone she saved up for months to have made just for him.
He'd thrown them all away once, back when he panicked after realizing what her feelings meant, when he thought that if he so much as acknowledged them, he'd lose control of everything he'd carefully built.
So he rejected her. Over and over. Not out of hatred, but fear.
Now, as he stared at those faded items, delicate, imperfect, but full of love, he realized something devastating.
She had taken none of it with her.
Not a single thing he'd ever given her. Not the jewelry. Not the letters. Not even the painting.
She hadn't just walked out. She'd erased herself from his life.
His chest tightened as his eyes fell to her once-full closet. He remembered the moving truck he'd seen in the driveway just a few days ago and hadn't thought twice about.
So she'd planned this.
Rosalie had been quietly, carefully preparing to leave, and she'd done it without looking back.
From the doorway, the butler stood with a heavy heart, watching his employer spiral in silence.
"Sir," he said quietly, "Miss Rosalie really left this time. And this time… her heart's truly broken. She has no intention of coming back."
The words were like ice water down Luke's spine.
Who gave her the nerve to leave like this?
Who gave her permission to vanish?
Gritting his teeth, fury and panic rising inside him, he muttered, "I'll find her. No matter what, it's not over."
His car sped through the city like a bullet, tires screeching as he raced toward the airport.
But he was too late.
Rosalie was already thousands of feet above ground, soaring through the clouds, far beyond his reach.
She sat by the window, the sun spilling over her face in warm, golden light. Below her, the world looked small. Distant. Quiet.
For the first time in years, she felt… calm.
There was peace in her chest. Peace in her silence. She didn't need to look back, because everything ahead of her was finally hers.
With a deep breath, Rosalie closed her eyes and smiled.
She was free.
