Chapter 22
Chapter 22
I hung up the phone, only to hear the sudden honk of a car horn. As soon as I turned around, I saw Mark's car parked by the roadside. He lowered the window, his brows furrowed as he noticed the urgency in my expression.
"Is there something wrong? Get in."
I did not hesitate because I was really in a rush. As I got into the car, I explained everything quickly to Mark while booking the earliest flight back home.
"Sonny went to my parents' house and said he wanted to marry me. I have no idea what's gotten into his head.""I've already broken things off cleanly," I continued. "I can't believe he has the audacity to show up at my home."Mark drove swiftly toward the airport.
"Sonny has nothing to lose," he said. "Of course, he's desperate to cling to you."His words were straight to the point. Every doubt in my mind cleared up.
I knew I could not believe Sonny's bullshit that he loved me. If he had truly cared, he wouldn't have watched me suffer without saying anything, back when they were together.Since our breakup, he had never tried to reach out and never made any effort to get me back. So why this sudden change? It was obvious that he was clinging to me as his last hope. He was desperate, hoping that I would save him and maybe even help him out of his troubles.
Mark glanced at me. It seemed he knew what I was thinking. "I heard that he took out a lot of loans," he added. "Probably to keep his company afloat.""
However, his chances are slim," he continued. "I doubt he'll be able to pay back what he owes."My heart sank at this revelation. A man under immense pressure could be capable of anything, even the most reckless acts.
We arrived at the airport in a jiffy. I hurriedly said goodbye to Mark. I did not expect him to accompany me to my home. After all, it was indeed too much. I also did not want to see me fall apart.
My mind was in chaos. I was still in a daze when I got off the plane. I took a taxi home and told the driver to speed up.
When I burst through the front door, I found my parents sitting awkwardly on the couch. Sonny had clearly been there for quite some time, seeing that his teacup was empty and there were fruit peels scattered on the table.
I looked at him with a cold face as I stormed toward him and grabbed his arm to push him toward the door.
"Get out!"
I yelled.I had reached my breaking point. I was usually a level level-headed and rational woman, even in the matter of the heart. I knew when to let go and move on.However, disappointment, anger, humiliation, frustration and all the emotions that I had been holding back burst out at that time.
"Get out!" I yelled again.
However, Sonny was a tall and strong man. He leaned against the door frame and did not move at all. My parents, who were hovering nearby, were torn between trying to calm things down and wanting him gone. They were helpless and distressed.
My eyes went red with rage as I glared at Sonny. His nonchalant behavior drove me crazy."What exactly do you want?" I demanded. "Talk!"He remained silent, his expression unchanged.
He simply watched me as I spiraled out of control.
When I realized he did not respond, my heart turned upside down. Finally, Sonny reached into his pocket and pulled out a ring, He looked at me with deep and sincere eyes.
"Bella," He said quietly, "I bought a new engagement ring. Marry me. Let's build a life together…"
