Chapter 9
Chapter 9
I thought I would stand my ground and refuse the deal.
But then William's condition relapsed.
The moment I rushed him to the hospital, fear gripped me.
The doctor said he needed to be admitted for treatment and observation before they could determine if surgery was necessary.
Another huge expense.
I checked my savings and let out a long sigh.
Somehow, Lucas found out and showed up at the hospital.
He offered to transfer William to a better facility, one with top-tier specialists.
And he wasn't wrong, William wasn't a citizen here. Eventually, he'd have to return home to prepare for his college entrance exams.
I weighed my options.
In the end, reality left me no choice.
Sitting on the plane beside Lucas, everything still felt surreal.
I was actually going to marry the man I liked.
Even if it was under someone else's name.
Lucas reached over, taking my hand in his. His fingers brushed over my fingertips, as if out of habit.
"If you're tired, get some sleep," he murmured. "Your dark circles are getting worse, you haven't been resting well, have you?"
I tried to pull my hand back, but he held on tighter.
I shot him a strange look.
"I'm not Emma. Why are you acting so concerned?"
He was completely unfazed.
"You're about to be my wife. Shouldn't I get into character early?"
He said it like it was the most natural thing in the world, even nudging me to lean against his shoulder.
I had spent the past few days running around the hospital for William. I was exhausted.
The familiar scent of wood and musk surrounded me.
Before I knew it, I had fallen asleep.
