Chapter 1
Chapter 1
For eight years, Ethan Sullivan and I had an unspoken understanding.
Just as I was about to shatter that fragile silence, I overheard him laughing with his friends, his voice full of carefree amusement.
"That's your older brother's daughter. You really shared a bed with her for eight years? You've got some nerve."
"Since you're engaged to Olivia now, you'd better figure something out. If your brother finds out, you're not going to be able to clean up this mess."
Finally, the man who had been silent spoke up, his tone indifferent. "What's the rush? Olivia's still abroad."
Ethan Sullivan... What exactly did you think I was to you?
Fighting back tears, I dialed my dad.
"Dad, I'm going through with the marriage to the Cooper family," I said, my voice steady despite the storm inside me.
What I didn't expect was that my wedding day would coincide with Ethan's.
As I stood there exchanging bouquets with his bride, Ethan suddenly froze, a look of panic crossing his face.
...
"Dad's already talked to the Coopers about the marriage…"
"Tell them I'll do it," I said.
This time, it was my father who froze.
He'd brought it up three times before.
Each time, I'd coldly turned him down, no hesitation, no room for argument.
He'd probably thought I'd never agree.
So when I did, it caught him completely off guard.
There was a long pause. "The Coopers are moving fast. Once it's set, there's no going back."
I hesitated for a moment.
"Think it over. I'll wait for your call."
"Okay."
The second I hung up, Ethan Sullivan walked in.
"What's wrong? You look tense."
He came up behind me, arms wrapping around my waist, his hands moving without restraint.
"Ethan… stop."
I nudged him with my elbow, trying to lighten the moment.
But he didn't let go. Instead, he scooped me up effortlessly and tossed me onto the bed.
"What's the matter? Don't like your uncle anymore?"
His teasing kisses were relentless, laced with something darker.
I tried to push him away.
He caught my wrists, pinning them above my head.
I couldn't fight him, not really.
My father didn't have any blood siblings, but he had nine sworn brothers.
Ethan, the youngest of them, was the one I'd loved since I was a teenager.
When I first came to Riverdale to find him, he kept his distance. We barely talked. He was always away.
But over time, he changed.
He started bringing me flowers, never in my favorite colors.
Took me out to dinner, shopping.
Bought me clothes that were always a size too big or too small.
Then one day, after I made the first move, I ended up in his bed.
He never said much.
So I convinced myself his silence meant acceptance.
For eight years, we kept it secret.
Turns out, he hadn't forgotten my favorite flower or my clothing size.
He just never bothered to get it right, because he wasn't buying them for me.
He was molding me into someone else.
Olivia Green.
A convenient substitute. Easy to keep. Easier to toss aside.
Buzz,
His private phone vibrated, the one only my father called.
In a flash, Ethan was off the bed, fully composed.
"Hey, Brother…" he said, stepping into the hallway.
I glanced over at his personal phone on the nightstand.
The lock screen had changed, from a photo of me to one of Olivia.
Then a new message popped up:
Ethan, I'm back. Meet me at our spot.
When he returned, his scent had changed, cigarette smoke clung to him.
He looked at me, eyes unreadable.
"Dad says you're leaving?"
I nodded.
He grabbed my chin gently but firmly.
"Did I do something wrong?"
I stared him down. "Which version of you are we talking about?"
"Sophia, don't start."
His tone softened as he started typing out a reply on his phone.
"I have something I need to take care of. I'll make it up to you later, okay?"
He said it like a promise.
But it wasn't a question.
He was already halfway out the door, to Olivia.
"Will you be back tonight?" I asked.
"Of course. How could I stay away when you're here?"
I didn't believe him.
Still, I waited.
All the way until 5 AM.
Then I wiped away my tears and called my father.
"Dad, I've made up my mind. I'll marry him."
The truth? If I'd insisted on staying with Ethan…
Dad might've agreed.
But this twisted kind of love?
I didn't want it anymore.
