Chapter 3
Chapter 3
Mr. Williams sat at the head of the table, his expression dark.
The other uncles instinctively stepped in, forming a wall between Ethan and the rest of us.
"The Coopers are here. Don't cause a scene."
"Ethan, what's wrong with you today?"
But Ethan didn't flinch. His eyes stayed locked on me, wild, desperate.
Even so, Alexander and I continued with the tea ceremony.
When I turned around, Ethan was still staring at me. His gaze was scorching.
Then, in a flash of frustration, he ripped the boutonniere from his chest and crushed it in his hand.
"Uncles, let him through," I said softly. "Ethan and I grew up together. Maybe… he just wants to say goodbye."
Alexander and I bowed in the traditional wedding rite. When we straightened, Ethan was standing right in front of us.
He looked nothing like the composed man I once knew, his eyes were bloodshot, jaw tight with rage.
"You're really doing this?" he said, voice shaking. "Marrying him, but still coming to see me off? I should be flattered."
Then, suddenly, he grabbed my hand.
Gasps rippled through the room.
My father, who had been silent until now, rose from his chair with a storm brewing in his eyes.
The Coopers exchanged uneasy glances. No one dared move, Ethan was still a Williams.
"You don't love him," Ethan said, his grip tight.
"Then who do I love?" I asked, calm but firm.
His voice cracked. "Me. You love me."
I pulled my hand away. "Ethan, know your place."
Alexander stepped forward, shielding me slightly with his body.
"If you're here to celebrate, you're welcome to stay. But if you're here to stir chaos, " he paused, voice even, ", I won't hesitate to have you escorted out."
It was polite. But make no mistake, it was a threat.
Ethan ignored him. "Sophia, I'm sorry. I messed up, I know. But just give me one more chance, please, "
Before he could finish, my father moved.
His foot connected squarely with Ethan's chest, sending him crashing to the floor. He rolled twice, his white suit now streaked with dirt.
"We should go to the main hall," Alexander said quietly.
I nodded, my voice barely a whisper. "Yes."
I turned, ready to leave this behind, but Ethan reached out and grabbed my ankle.
"Sophia," he rasped. "I was wrong. You don't love him… do you?"
