Chapter 4
Chapter 4
Under the watchful eyes of the lawyers and flashing cameras, I signed the transfer agreement, officially handing over all my assets and shares in the company to my son. The applause that followed was deafening, the crowd buzzing with admiration. Whispers of awe spread through the room as people marveled at the unbreakable bond between mother and son, envy written all over their faces.
Just then, Rosie made her grand entrance, fashionably late, arm linked with Stephen's. The room fell silent, confusion and disbelief spreading across the crowd as Rosie dramatically pulled out a paternity test report. Her voice rang out like a bombshell, cutting through the tension.
"Daphne, the truth is, the child you've raised for all these years, the one you had through IVF, was born from my and Stephen's fertilized egg."
"I'm Kian's biological mother. Letting him call you 'Mom' for the past twenty years was already repayment enough for carrying him. Now, it's time for you to give him back to me."
A stunned silence followed, quickly shattering into a chaotic uproar.
"Isn't she the poor student Daphne always supported? How could she end up with Daphne's husband and have Daphne carry their child?"
"This is insane! It's like a twisted 'farmer and the snake' story! Daphne helped her, and this is how she repays her?"
"And the timing? She waits until Daphne signs over the company's shares before making this claim? It's all about the money!"
"Exactly! She used Daphne to have a kid, and now she's trying to steal everything! This is pure evil!"
Amid the frenzy, Stephen stood, his voice dripping with self-righteousness.
"For the first half of my life, I was stuck in a marriage. As a man, I kept telling myself I had to be responsible."
"But I'm human too. On so many sleepless nights, I asked myself, Is this the life I really want?"
"Daphne is from a good family, and she's treated both me and Kian well, but my heart belongs to Rosie. Is it wrong for me to follow my true feelings?"
"Marriage should bring happiness, and so should divorce. It shouldn't be a prison. I hope everyone can support us!"
He spoke as if he were some tragic hero, fighting for his "true love" against all odds.
I didn't even spare him a glance. Instead, I turned to Kian, my face calm and composed. "What do you think of all this?"
Kian glanced at the share transfer agreement in his hand, his expression unreadable, before responding with a quiet calm. "Mom, this will be the last time I call you that."
"Even though you raised me for over twenty years, you're not my biological mother."
"Blood is thicker than water. I just hope you won't stand in the way of our family's reunion."
Without another word, he threw a divorce agreement at me, his voice cold and smug. "Go ahead, divorce Dad today. Set him free."
"And for all the years you took care of me, I'll give you two hundred dollars a month in alimony."
The room exploded in outrage.
"No wonder they say like mother, like son. What kind of family is this?"
"Exactly! Daphne spoiled him for years, and now that she's given him her entire fortune, he turns around and calls someone else 'Mom'?"
"Two hundred bucks a month? That's nothing! Who does he think he is?"
"I'm an outsider, and even I can't stand this! Daphne, don't listen to these ingrates!"
The crowd's anger was palpable, some even offering to help me sue to get my assets back. But through it all, Rosie and Stephen stayed eerily calm, as if they had been expecting this moment.
But amidst the chaos, I simply smiled. "Alright."
To everyone's shock, I signed the divorce papers without a second thought.
Rosie and Stephen blinked in surprise, clearly not expecting me to agree so easily. They quickly checked both the divorce and share transfer documents, confirming everything was in order. Their smug grins returned, and they finally allowed themselves to relax.
Seeing their triumphant expressions, I couldn't help but smile too, but it wasn't in agreement.
"Since you've given me such a grand surprise," I said, my voice smooth, "it's only fair that I return the favor, with a special gift."
Stephen furrowed his brow, clearly confused. "A gift? What kind of gift?"
Everyone in the room leaned in, eager to see what I would do next.
