Chapter 11
Chapter 11
I could feel my blood boiling, but I forced myself to stay calm.
I needed to hear the truth. I had to know.
"Tell me what the hell happened," I demanded through clenched teeth.
Claire stepped closer, her voice full of twisted pride.
"The day Matthew died, I called Andrew. I knew he was picking up your son from school, so I timed it perfectly."
"What the hell does that have to do with anything?" I asked, my heart pounding harder with each word.
"Everything," she hissed. "I called him, pretending to be upset. I told him my dog had died, that I needed someone to talk to. Andrew didn't fall for it at first. He said he couldn't because he was with Matthew, but I convinced him. I told him to drop Matthew off at the train station and come see me."
"And he did it." My stomach churned as the pieces began to fall into place.
Claire nodded, smug as ever.
"Of course he did! He was in love with me. Anyway, as soon as he dropped Matthew at the station, I texted the man I hired."
"What man?" My voice was trembling now, fear creeping in.
"The man I hired to make sure Matthew wouldn't come home that day," Claire said casually, like it was nothing.
"I sent him pictures of Matthew and told him to bump into him, make him fall onto the tracks. I said make it look like an accident. And he did."
I couldn't breathe. The words felt like they were suffocating me.
"You… you had my son killed?" My voice was barely a whisper, but it hit harder than anything else.
I couldn't believe this was happening.
Claire shrugged, completely unfazed.
"Well, it was supposed to bring Andrew back to me. I thought if Matthew was out of the picture, Andrew would have no reason to stay with you. But it backfired. Instead of coming back to me, he spiraled into depression. He never even knew the truth."
I felt a rush of rage unlike anything I'd ever known. I could barely hold it in.
"You killed my son… for nothing?" I spat, my voice breaking with fury.
"You destroyed my family for your selfish little game?"
Claire's eyes narrowed, but she didn't back down.
"It wasn't for nothing! It was for Andrew!" she hissed. "Everything I've done was for him!"
I was shaking with anger. "You're sick, Claire! You're going to regret telling me this. I'm going to make sure you go to jail for this!"
Claire let out a cold laugh.
"Why would I regret it? I'll only regret it if you tell someone. But why do you think I'm so relaxed?"
I stared at her, my mind racing. Something was off. She was too confident. Too sure of herself.
"What are you saying?" I whispered, barely able to keep my voice steady.
Claire stepped closer, locking eyes with me, her smile sickening.
"I'm saying, Emily... I'm not letting you walk out of here alive."
I froze as she pulled a gun from her pocket.
The cold metal glinted in the dim light, and my heart skipped a beat.
I was scared. Of course, I was. A gun was pointed at me.
But this was my chance.
I couldn't let her get away with it. Matthew deserved justice.
"You think this will scare me?" I said, my voice steadier than I felt.
"You think you can kill me the way you killed Matthew?"
Claire's eyes burned with anger. "Shut up, Emily! You don't know what you're talking about."
I moved fast, adrenaline flooding my system. With a swift lunge, I grabbed the gun from her hand.
She might have been stronger, but my love for Matthew gave me a strength I didn't know I had.
I twisted the gun away from her and aimed it right at her.
"This is for Matthew," I said, my finger hovering over the trigger.
But before I could act, a voice shouted out.
"Emily, stop!"
I froze.
It was Andrew.
He stepped between Claire and me, grabbing the gun out of my hands.
I blinked in shock. "Andrew, what the hell are you doing?! She's the one who killed Matthew! And you're gonna protect her?!"
Andrew's eyes softened, regret flooding his features.
"I know. I heard everything just now. I'm sorry I let myself be manipulated. But you don't have to do this."
Claire saw her opening. She rushed toward Andrew.
"Andrew, please! I did it all for you! I love you!"
But Andrew ignored her completely. His voice was cold as ice.
"Emily, I've already lost Matthew. I can't lose you too. If you want her dead, I'll do it for you."
Without a second thought, he turned and pointed the gun at Claire.
"Andrew, no!" Claire screamed, but her voice was drowned by his steady resolve.
"You took everything from us, Claire. This ends now."
And just like that, Andrew pulled the trigger.
The shot rang out, and Claire fell to the ground, lifeless.
I stood there, frozen, unable to speak.
I wasn't sure what to feel. Shock, disbelief... maybe even relief.
Andrew stared down at her for a moment, his face blank.
Then, he pulled out his phone and dialed.
"Hello, I want to report a murder. I just killed someone."
