Chapter 12
Chapter 12
A week later, the group returned to the capital after their vacation shopping spree.
Vincent Montgomery couldn't wait to bring Emily Carter back to the Montgomery estate.
Mrs. Montgomery sat in the elegantly furnished hall, ignoring Emily's greeting as she fixed Vincent with a disappointed stare. "I must have failed in raising you."
"It hasn't even been long since Rain's accident, and here you are, bringing her father's love child before me."
"She was practically your sister, growing up together. How can you be so heartless?"
Mrs. Montgomery had been close to Rain's late mother, and after her passing, she had treated Rain like her own daughter.
Vincent gave Emily—whose eyes were red-rimmed—a reassuring glance before scoffing. "Mom, you've been fooled by Rain."
"She set that fire just to get attention. Someone as arrogant and domineering as her would never actually kill herself."
Mrs. Montgomery studied him for a long moment before shaking her head with a sigh.
"If you won't believe me, then at least trust the police. Take Daniel Harrison with you to the station right now and collect Rain's belongings."
"Then you'll see for yourself whether she lied to you or not."
Vincent's expression flickered, but his voice remained firm. "Impossible. The last time Rain set a fire on purpose, it was just to lure me and Daniel over."
Emily spoke up softly, her voice fragile. "Auntie, it's a misunderstanding. Vincent only doubts her because Rain deceived him before."
"Why not go see for yourself? Then you'll know the truth."
Vincent's chest heaved as he nodded sharply. "Fine. I'll go. Let's see what tricks she's trying to pull this time!"
He turned and strode out without another word.
He forgot about Emily entirely—until she caught up to him, breathless.
Only then did Vincent pause, his steps faltering.
For some reason, an ominous feeling settled in his chest, so heavy it nearly suffocated him.
