Chapter 19 I Called the Police
Chapter 19 I Called the Police
It had been so long since I last saw Vincent Montgomery, but he was far from the confident man I remembered. He looked utterly defeated.
I had assumed that without me—someone he supposedly despised—around, Vincent would mourn for a few days before happily carrying on with Emily Carter.
Turns out, I held more weight in his heart than I thought.
Not that I cared.
The police arrived quickly.
"This gentleman mistook me for someone else and won't leave me alone," I said with a weary expression, handing over my ID. "My name is Stella Ye. It's always been Stella Ye."
"No, you're Rain Lin. Not Stella. We grew up together—I could never mistake you," Vincent insisted, even after checking my ID.
"Then where's your proof?" I asked.
He faltered.
I knew he had no photos of me. Not even childhood pictures—I'd personally visited Mrs. Montgomery to retrieve every last one. Before leaving, I burned them all.
A faint laugh escaped me. "See? You can't even produce evidence. Who would believe you, claiming I'm someone you know with nothing to back it up?"
Vincent's expression darkened. After a long pause, he spoke.
"Rain, I know you resent me."
"But it doesn't matter. I'll make it up to you, bit by bit."
"I'll have the house rebuilt exactly as it was. Just like before."
"Whenever you're free, I'll take you to see it."
I had no patience for his empty words. Asking the officers to keep him away, I returned to the hotel.
After explaining my abrupt departure to Linda, I opened my phone to book the earliest flight out.
At eight the next morning, I opened my door—and there he was, waiting.
Vincent's clothes were rumpled, his jaw shadowed with stubble, dark circles under his eyes. He hadn't slept all night.
The moment he saw me, the man leaning against the wall straightened, his eyes lighting up. "Rain, you're awake."
"I told you, I'm not Rain Lin," I said flatly. "Instead of wasting time harassing me, why not look for the real her?"
I walked past him without another glance.
Vincent followed. "By noon at the latest, Emily and her mother will kneel and apologize to you."
The two had fled to a small town, but even there, they couldn't escape Vincent's retribution. With dwindling savings, they'd been forced to scrape by, eventually resorting to online loans just to survive.
I ignored him, meeting my colleagues in the lobby.
Vincent trailed behind at a distance.
"Who's that guy? He's kind of hot," Linda asked.
I kept my eyes on my phone. "No idea."
