Plot Twist, The 'Dead' Ex is Thriving

Chapter 24

Chapter 24

Back at the company, I threw myself into work again.

Winning a prestigious award had boosted my salary, and my workload grew heavier than before. On my second day back, Daniel Harrison moved out of the neighboring house and returned to the capital. The place remained vacant for a while.

A year later, a young man moved in. Like me, he had Eastern features—his name was Kevin Anderson, a charming and witty guy. I later learned he worked nearby. Our offices weren't far apart, and our schedules aligned, so we often ran into each other.

A few months in, he confessed his feelings for me. I didn't say yes. But Kevin wasn't one to give up. He had a way of never overstepping, never making anything awkward, and I enjoyed his company. Still, I wasn't ready for a relationship.

Two more years passed.

During the Spring Festival, Daniel told me that Sophia Carter, Emily's mother, had passed away the previous month. Emily herself had been sentenced to nine years in prison for attempted murder. The wind howled, but I didn't feel the cold. Daniel rambled on about other things, never mentioning Vincent Montgomery.

I'd heard Vincent had been hospitalized twice in the past year for stomach bleeding. Even then, he couldn't stop drinking. But none of that concerned me anymore.

After discussing Sophia, Daniel gathered his courage and asked, "Are you coming back for the holidays, Lauren?"

"No," I replied. "I'm doing well here."

Two months earlier, I'd won another award. The capital held nothing for me now. My focus was on working harder and achieving greater success.

Stepping outside, I basked in the rare winter sunlight, feeling every pore relax. Ahead, Kevin stood against the light, the sun turning his hair golden and making his already striking features even more dazzling.

My heart skipped a beat.

Tucking my phone away, I waved at him. He smiled and walked toward me, his eyes reflecting my figure.

Maybe giving love a chance wouldn't be so bad after all.
