Chapter 3
Chapter 3
I never expected Max to show up at the restaurant with Chloe in tow.
The client still hadn't arrived, and they just plopped down across from me. It felt... weird, and I couldn't help but bluntly tell them to leave.
"I'm meeting with Mr. Smith from Starlight Tech," I said, hoping they'd get the hint.
Max raised an eyebrow, totally unfazed. "Did Mr. Smith say he didn't want to see me?"
I fell silent. Honestly, there was no point in arguing. Max was still my boss, after all.
As the meal went on, Mr. Smith had his assistant uncork a fancy bottle of wine. My stomach churned as I remembered what the doctor had said when I booked my abortion: "Your uterus was already damaged from the previous miscarriage after the car accident. This pregnancy is a miracle. If you miscarry again, you might never be able to get pregnant."
I pressed my lips together, about to politely turn down the wine when Chloe piped up with that annoying grin of hers. "I've heard Karla can really hold her liquor. I've been dying to see it for myself!"
She had this wide-eyed admiration, like I was some kind of superhero.
I shot her a cold stare. "Who told you that?"
Her smile froze, and she looked nervously at Max. "Did I... did I say something wrong?"
Max patted her on the head, then turned to me, his voice cutting through the tension. "Karla, it's just one drink. Stop being so uptight. You're not a little girl anymore."
A chill ran through me. Meeting his icy gaze, I smiled faintly and said, each word deliberate: "Mr. Williams, I can't drink because... I'm pregnant."
The room went silent. You could practically hear a pin drop.
Chloe was the first to react, her face lighting up with excitement. She jumped to her feet, raising her glass to me. "Congratulations, sis!"
She was about to take a sip when Max grabbed her arm, his expression suddenly serious.
"Chloe, you're pregnant too. No alcohol," he said, his tone stern.
For once, Chloe didn't listen. "No, I have to drink!" she said, her voice rising. "Ever since I got here, I keep upsetting sis... this drink is my apology to her!"
Her voice shook with frustration, and before anyone could stop her, she threw back the whole glass.
The instant she did, her face twisted in pain, her eyes watering, and she began coughing violently. Her cheeks flushed a deep red, as if she were about to pass out.
Max jumped up, panic flashing in his eyes as he turned to me, pointing a furious finger. "Are you happy now?"
"Only someone as naive as Chloe would fall for your lies!" he shouted. "If anything happens to the baby, I swear, I will never forgive you!"
I met his furious gaze, unfazed. "Do as you please."
I muttered an apology to Mr. Smith, then stood up and made my way to the door.
Max's voice rang out behind me. "Karla, I've had enough of you! In your eyes, everything Chloe does is wrong! If you can't accept her, why don't we just get divorced?"
I was taken aback for a second but quickly figured it out. In five years of marriage, Max had never once publicly acknowledged me. But now, to force me to back down and accept Chloe, he was ready to throw it all away.
I stared at him, his handsome face twisted with anger. I nodded once, coldly. "Fine, let's divorce."
With that, I turned and walked out without another glance.
Once I was outside the restaurant, I immediately called the divorce lawyer. But just as I was talking, a bright light suddenly flashed in my eyes. A car came barreling toward me, moving too fast to avoid. I froze, my legs going weak, and I stumbled backward.
Right before it hit me, the driver slammed on the brakes and swerved at the last second, missing me by inches. I crumpled to the ground, heart pounding.
A girl passing by rushed over to help me, but when she touched my waist, she screamed.
"Oh my god! You're bleeding so much!"
Confused, I looked down to see blood spreading out around me in a large pool.
At the hospital, the doctor told me to contact family. My hand gripped the phone tight as my eyes flicked through my contacts. I hesitated for a second, then bypassed Max's name and called the lawyer instead.
The memory of the car flashed in my mind. The license plate, the same one Max and I had chosen together.
