Chapter 6
Chapter 6
Under the crystal chandelier in the banquet hall, Mia Jefferson turned to leave, but Evan Sutherland suddenly seized her wrist.
"Mia, you truly disappoint me," Evan sneered, his knuckles turning white. "The moment you heard I was sick, you couldn't wait to cut ties?"
Mia struggled, but her efforts were futile—the strap of her gown snapped. I tightened my grip on the champagne glass. This scene was far more dramatic than I'd anticipated.
"If you're so afraid," Evan hissed, his voice dangerously low, "why don't we go to hell together?" With a violent tug, he ripped the chiffon fabric of her skirt, the tearing sound sharp and jarring.
Mia grabbed an ice bucket and hurled it at him. Blood bloomed across Evan's forehead, mixing with spilled red wine on the white tablecloth like some grotesque abstract painting.
"Murder!" Mrs. Sutherland shrieked, rushing forward. Her diamond-studded nails raked across Mia's face, leaving angry red marks. "If anything happens to my son, I'll make sure your entire family pays for it!"
Mia staggered back, her gaze locking onto me through the crowd. I jingled my car keys and turned away, hearing her choked sob as she called my name.
The roar of the engine drowned out the chaos behind me. In the rearview mirror, the flashing blue lights of an ambulance pierced the night. I pressed the accelerator—there was still an international conference waiting for me tonight.
The hospital corridor was bathed in harsh fluorescent light as I leaned against the nurse's station, scrolling through my phone. Suddenly, a notification popped up: Heiress Mia Jefferson Arrested for Assault at Wedding Venue.
The video showed Mia being escorted out by two female officers. Her once-flawless makeup was smeared with tears, her hair disheveled like a madwoman's. The arrogance in her eyes had been replaced by sheer terror as she screamed at the camera, "Ryan! Save me!"
I smirked and swiped the video away.
Three days later, the hospital was buzzing with updates about Mia. Evan's injuries had been classified as minor, so she was only detained for a week. But the real bombshell came when she rushed straight to the emergency room after her release.
"Heard she was begging for PEP," Nurse Lily whispered conspiratorially. "But it was too late. The test results came back."
I kept my eyes on the medical chart I was filling out. "Positive?"
"Worse," Lily murmured. "She's pregnant too. Passed out on the spot. Her parents slapped her right there in the hallway when they arrived."
During lunch break, I checked social media. The top five trending tags were all about Mia: #MiaJeffersonHIV, #MiaJeffersonPregnant, #MiaJeffersonFatherAssault.
The most viral clip showed Mia's father pointing at her hospital bed, shouting, "We gave you everything! And this is how you repay us? Throwing away a brilliant doctor fiancé for some lowlife?"
The comments section exploded:
[Karma! Gold diggers like her deserve it!]
[Her ex was the youngest attending physician at Renhe Hospital. Talk about bad judgment.]
[Update: Her parents are elite high school teachers. Parents are petitioning to have them fired!]
I turned off my phone. Outside, the sunlight was warm and bright. The girl who had once strutted through campus like a peacock now lay isolated in the infectious disease ward.
The head nurse hurried over. "Dr. Lin, Bed 3's condition is deteriorating!"
As I stood, my phone buzzed again. An unknown number flashed on the screen: [Ryan, I was wrong. Please help me.]
