Chapter 8
Chapter 8
"Sophia, just hear me out."
Alex's voice trembled, but the guilt in his eyes was unmistakable. Every word felt like a blade, each one slicing through my resolve. My grip on the crumpled photo tightened, the one that had shattered the fragile illusions I'd built. Alex and Elise, their lips locked in a moment of betrayal, framed under the dim lights of La Belle Nuit, a place that used to be ours.
"Explain?" I snapped, barely able to choke out the word. "Explain this?"
I slammed the photo onto the table between us. It landed face-up, an accusation that neither of us could pretend to ignore.
He stared at the photo, then at me, his jaw clenched tight. The hands that had once held me with promises now hung uselessly at his sides, his fingers twitching like they wanted to reach out but knew better.
"It's not what it looks like," he said, his voice strained, desperate.
"Not what it, " I cut him off, a bitter laugh escaping my lips. "Don't. Just... don't."
The words felt like they were strangling me, but I wouldn't cry, not in front of him, not for him.
"Sophia, please," he pleaded, taking a step closer. "There's more to this than you think."
I took a step back, distancing myself. His proximity only made the storm inside me rage harder.
"Oh, I know enough," I spat, each word dripping with venom. "I know Elise has been manipulating you. I know she's working with Kerrington. And I know, " I paused, swallowing the bitter truth. "I know you let her."
His eyes widened, panic flashing across his face. For a second, I saw the Alex I used to know, the one who'd do anything to protect me. But that guy was gone. Or maybe he never existed at all.
"I didn't let her, "
"Don't lie to me!" I screamed, my composure shattering completely. "Do you have any idea what it's like to piece everything together? To watch everything fall apart because you, " I choked on the words, shaking my head. "You betrayed me."
He froze, his fists clenched, his face pale. The silence between us was suffocating, thick with all the words we weren't saying.
"You're right," he finally admitted, his voice barely a whisper. "I betrayed you."
That confession hit me like a punch to the stomach. I almost collapsed, but I caught myself. I wouldn't let him see me break.
"But," he continued, taking a step forward, "you don't know the whole story."
I met his gaze, desperate to find the truth behind the chaos. But all I saw was desperation in his eyes.
"Then tell me," I demanded, my voice trembling. "Make me understand."
He hesitated, the seconds dragging into what felt like forever. Finally, he spoke, his voice low.
"Elise… she blackmailed me. She had evidence, things from my past that I couldn't let come to light. And Kerrington... he used her to get to me. To ruin me."
His words hung in the air, a tangled mess of lies and half-truths. I wanted to believe him. God, I wanted to. But the image of him and Elise, their lips locked in that kiss, was burned into my brain like a scar.
"And you thought I didn't deserve to know?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper. "You thought lying would protect me?"
"I didn't want to drag you into this," he said, his voice breaking. "You don't know what they're capable of, Sophia. They'll destroy you. They'll destroy us."
Us. The word twisted in my chest, a reminder of everything we once had, and everything that was gone now.
"There is no ‘us,'" I said, my voice cold and final. "Not after this."
His face crumpled, but I didn't let it soften me. I turned to leave, but his voice stopped me cold.
"Wait."
I froze, my hand on the doorknob. Slowly, I turned back to him.
"What now?" I asked, my voice hollow.
"Stay," he said, his eyes pleading with raw emotion. "Stay with me. Trust me."
I stared at him, disbelief flooding my chest. Trust him? After everything?
"Why?" I asked, my voice shaking with the weight of it all. "Why should I trust you?"
He stepped closer, his gaze locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart skip a beat.
"Because I love you," he said, the words raw and unguarded. "And because I can't do this without you."
For a moment, I almost believed him. My heart wavered. But my mind screamed at me to stay strong. This wasn't love. Love didn't break you like this. Love didn't leave you bleeding and broken on the floor.
Before I could respond, the sound of shattering glass interrupted us, snapping the tension like a snapped wire. We both turned toward the noise, our bodies tense.
"What the, " Alex started, but he was cut off by a loud crash from the hallway.
My pulse raced as heavy footsteps echoed, growing louder with every second.
"Sophia," Alex said, his voice low and urgent. "Stay behind me."
But I wasn't sure I could trust him to protect me, not anymore. The door burst open, and before I could react, a man stepped inside, his face obscured by shadows.
"You should've walked away," the intruder said, his voice cold and threatening.
I glanced at Alex, his face pale but determined. He reached for something, was it a weapon? A plan? I didn't know.
But one thing was certain: the truth wasn't just bitter. It was dangerous.
