The Ex-Wife's Escape: From Betrayal to Revenge

Chapter 14

Chapter 14

Sophia Williams cut her steak with effortless grace, the clink of silverware against porcelain ringing clear in the quiet dining room. The others at the table exchanged glances and wisely fell silent.

As night deepened, Sophia politely declined her friends’ offers to accompany her home. The sharp click of her heels echoed through the empty stairwell.

The sound of running water ceased as she stepped out of the shower, wrapped in a plush robe. The housekeeper had already prepared a late-night snack and, upon seeing Sophia, gave a slight bow before quietly exiting.

The bitterness of coffee lingered on her tongue when her phone suddenly vibrated. An unfamiliar number flashed across the screen.

"Hello?"

The panicked voice of the village chief crackled through the line. "Sophia, your aunt—she’s fallen ill..."

Her fingers tightened abruptly, the coffee cup rattling against the table with a jarring clatter.

The moment she hung up, she dialed the airline. "I need the earliest flight back home."

In the walk-in closet, she yanked open her suitcase, hands trembling slightly as she haphazardly stuffed clothes inside.

By the following evening, Sophia stood at the doorstep of the old countryside house, travel-worn and weary. The teacup in her uncle’s hand slipped from his grasp, shattering on the ground.

"Sophia?!"

Her aunt rushed out from the kitchen, eyes instantly reddening. "Child, why did you—"

"I missed you," Sophia forced a smile, placing carefully selected health supplements on the table.

Her aunt clutched her hand with a sigh. "The round-trip tickets must’ve cost a fortune, you silly girl..."

"Aunt, tomorrow I’m taking you both to the capital for a full check-up."

"No, no need!" Her aunt waved her hands dismissively, only to break into a violent coughing fit.

Sophia steadied her, shocked by how frail she had become—the once-warm hands now nothing but skin and bone.

Late that night, her aunt finally confessed the truth. "It’s our fault... If only we hadn’t pushed you two together..."

Sophia squeezed her aunt’s trembling fingers. "It wasn’t your doing."

Gazing out at the moonlight, she recalled the taunting look in Isabella Taylor’s eyes all those years ago.

"Sophia, he’ll be mine sooner or later."

How naïve she had been, believing Ethan Johnson would always stand by her side. She never imagined betrayal could take root so quietly, long before it ever came to light.
