Chapter 19
Chapter 19
"Ethan Johnson, you disgust me."
Sophia Williams' voice was soft, yet it struck Ethan's heart like a poisoned dagger.
He staggered back, his back slamming against the cold wall. There was nowhere left to retreat.
Ethan's face turned deathly pale in an instant.
He wanted to explain, but his throat felt blocked—not a single word could escape.
Sophia suddenly straightened, the mocking smile on her lips vanishing.
"You can't even answer a simple question."
"What else is there to say?"
"If I could go back, I'd rather never have met you."
Then she wouldn't have been hurt by him over and over, wouldn't have felt pain so suffocating.
She stared at the man she had once loved deeply. His eyes were filled with agony.
All his feeble excuses sounded laughable in the face of his betrayal.
Sophia listened quietly, her gaze as still as stagnant water.
Only when Ethan finished his last word did she speak, her tone indifferent.
"Are you done?"
Ethan nodded frantically, watching her nervously like a prisoner awaiting judgment.
But Sophia gave him no further response.
She had wasted too much time on him already. If she didn't return soon, her aunt and uncle would worry.
As she turned away, she dropped one final sentence:
"Don't see me again."
A dull thud sounded behind her. Ethan collapsed to the floor, staring hopelessly at her retreating figure.
Did she really hate him that much?
Not even willing to give him a single chance.
"...Hah."
After a long silence, a bitter laugh echoed through the empty hallway.
True to her words, Ethan didn't appear in the days that followed.
After her aunt was discharged from the hospital, Sophia moved them into the courtyard house, promising to show them around the city.
One afternoon, while the elderly couple napped, she stepped out for some fresh air.
The moment she pushed open the gate, she saw familiar figures waiting outside.
It was the butler and maids from the villa.
The moment they spotted her, they hurried forward.
"Ms. Williams, we heard you were back, so we came to see you."
Heard?
A cold glint flashed in Sophia's eyes. No one except Ethan knew about her return.
She politely invited them inside, but they declined, standing at the doorstep to explain their purpose.
After she left, they had returned all the gifts she had given them to Ethan. But days later, he bought them new ones, saying it was in gratitude for their care over the years.
Feeling indebted, they thought they should persuade her. After all, they had been married, and Ethan had realized his mistakes. They hoped she could give him another chance.
Seeing how devastated Ethan had been lately, they couldn't bear it.
Sophia scoffed inwardly. When Ethan couldn't convince her himself, he sent others to plead his case.
She knew they meant well, so she simply smiled without responding.
Realizing their words had no effect, the butler and maids exchanged a few pleasantries before leaving.
The encounter ruined Sophia's mood for shopping, so she turned back to her room for a nap.
Her sleep was restless.
In three months abroad, she had never dreamed of Ethan—yet today, he appeared in her dreams.
And more absurdly, she dreamed of their wedding.
