Chapter 8
Chapter 8
The night was deep when Sophia Williams stepped through her front door. Her phone screen lit up the moment she crossed the threshold.
"Sophia..." Ethan Johnson's voice came through the receiver, laced with exhaustion. "Isabella... she's not doing well."
Sophia's fingers trembled slightly, yet her voice remained steady. "I see. Take care of her."
A brief silence lingered on the other end. "Her brother entrusted her to me before he left the country. I... might not be back for a few days."
"It's fine." Sophia gazed at the moonlight outside the window, forcing a bitter smile.
Three more days, and she would be gone.
Her phone buzzed suddenly—Isabella had sent a video. In the clip, beneath the glow of a crystal chandelier, Isabella wore a pink princess dress while Ethan wrapped his arms around her waist, whispering into her ear.
"I want you to spoil me just like you do with Sophia!" Isabella cooed.
Ethan chuckled, pinching her cheek. "Of course, my little princess."
Sophia shut off the video, grabbed her coat, and walked out.
At the law firm, the attorney adjusted his glasses. "Ms. Williams, once you sign this agreement, your marriage with Mr. Johnson will be officially dissolved."
The pen scratched against the paper as Sophia signed without hesitation.
Two days left.
Another video arrived from Isabella. The shaky footage showed Ethan bending down, pressing his ear to Isabella's flat stomach.
"It's only been three months. You can't hear anything yet," Isabella giggled.
"I hear him calling me 'Daddy,'" Ethan murmured, his voice sickeningly tender.
The next frame made Sophia lock her screen abruptly. She dialed her lawyer. "Sell all my shares. Every last one."
At the airport counter, the attendant handed her a boarding pass with a polite smile. "Ms. Williams, your flight departs in two hours."
On the day of her departure, Sophia woke early.
First, she packed every luxury item from her walk-in closet and distributed them among the household staff.
"Madam, these are too valuable..." the butler hesitated.
"Consider them parting gifts," Sophia replied brightly.
Second, she compiled every "trophy" Isabella had sent into a file and emailed it to every major advertiser in the city.
Third, she placed the divorce papers gently on the entryway table.
Her phone rang as she double-checked her luggage.
"Sophia, I'm coming home to be with you," Ethan said, his voice still warm.
"Good," Sophia replied, watching the sunlight stream through the window. "I have a big surprise waiting for you."
She hung up, then wheeled her suitcase out the door.
"Sophia, going on a trip?" a neighbor called out cheerfully.
"Yes," Sophia glanced back at the villa she had lived in for three years. "Somewhere far away."
As the taxi sped toward the airport, the giant screens in the city center flickered to life. Through the window, Sophia watched as intimate clips of Ethan and Isabella played on loop.
She pressed the power button, then tossed her SIM card out the window.
When the plane soared into the sky, Sophia finally let her eyes redden.
