Chapter 22: Blackmail
Chapter 22: Blackmail
Mila's pov
Me: I'm not interested in you anymore. Stop blaming the other man in my life. You did this to yourself.
When Everett didn't reply, I thought he had settled down and would move on. Despite him dropping the issue, however, my sleep wasn't as restful as I would have liked it to be. His aggressiveness was unnerving and I never expected him to be the jealous type.
The next day in class, I was drowsy. I propped my chin in my right hand, barely able to keep my head up. Staring at the empty cup of Even with considerable effort to stay awake my lids closed. Just as I had fallen asleep Ada nudged me, holding her phone.
"Quick. Look at our group chat!" she whispered fiercely.
My heart leapt in my throat and my hands were clammy as I stared at the picture Everett had shared. There I was, in my lingerie with my vibrator, posed for him. Fortunately, my hair was covering my face, but I wasn’t going to let this slide.
Me: Just what the hell do you think you're doing posting my pictures in group chat? *cursing face*
Everett: *laughing emoji* I did that by mistake. Don't worry. I'll take it down now.
Tapping my foot, I anxiously stared at the screen waiting for that glorious, "Deleted for everyone" message in place of my picture. As each second clicked by, the knot in my stomach became tighter. Was Everett going to mess with me and keep it up for longer? He’d been so erratic lately.
Swallowing was difficult. My mouth went dry as I imagined the salacious picture being passed around the college. I was prepped to send him a scathing message, but then my photo disappeared. Sighing, I dropped my head to my forearm still feeling overwhelmed but moderately better.
After a few seconds, my phone’s illumination flickered against my closed lids. Sitting up, I dragged the message down.
Everett: Come to my house tonight or more "mistakes" like that will happen. Next time I'll send photos that include your face.
Asshole. Shakily, my chest burned as my face flushed. Tapping the screen with both thumbs, I furiously typed and sent him a message.
Me: I can't believe you're using blackmail to get me to hang out. You've really sunk low. *thumbs down*
Everett: What's the worst that can happen? At least my dad won't be there breathing down our necks. You never know. It might be fun. *winking emoji*
Holding the phone in my shaking hands, I contemplated. Within a few seconds, I saw that someone from our group had taken a screenshot and directly messaged me to flirt.
Mason: Remind you of anyone?
Me: Not really.
Mason: Look in a mirror.
There was a pause when I didn't answer, as I stared at the three bouncing dots. My heart raced, praying he wouldn’t pursue the issue. Licking my lips, I pulled my shirt away from my body as I was hit with several hot flashes.
Mason: I imagined you had a nice rack on you but now, there is no doubt. Let's get together, sexy. *heart face*
Exhaling, I bit down on my lower lip. It felt like everything was out of my control and I knew it would only get worse if I didn't do what Everett asked. But I didn't want to fool around with him, and I was sure that he'd be pushy. I needed my friend’s take.
Sliding the phone over to Ada, I pointed. I watched as her eyes flitted across the screen. She drew her lips down, then ran her fingers through her hair.
"What would you do?" I whispered to her. She pursed her lips as she stared at the floor in thought then handed me the phone.
"Could Mr. Williams help? This is his son after all and you two have a sort of relationship." She lifted her hands and shrugged.
It was a worthwhile idea but then I recalled how I had to consult with him over the procurement report. The last thing I wanted was to embarrass myself again by asking for more help. Telling myself that Everett wouldn't be rude in his own home, I was convinced that this wasn't as bad as I was making it out to be.
"Now that I think about it, we don't need to involve him. I can handle Everett," I said to her with a reassuring nod. Her smile seemed forced, but she let it go.
Sitting back in my chair, I tried to focus on the lecture instead of the spinning thoughts in my head. Maybe if I talked with him again, all of this could be put to rest.
Once class was over, I went to his house. I didn't come here often but I knew he would be waiting for me so when I realized the door was unlocked, I decided to go inside. After I entered, I strained my eyes to see the pitch-blackness. I tried flipping a light switch but couldn't find one.
"Hello?" I called. Nobody answered as I stood in the silent darkness.
My heart thumped, deafening me, and a prickling sensation crawled up my spine. The situation was eerie and all I wanted to do was leave. Whirling around, I double timed it toward the door. I had my foot outside but then I was stopped when someone grabbed my arms and kissed me.
