Chapter 30: Everett's Plans
Chapter 30: Everett's Plans
Mila's pov
"Mila! I've been worried about you for hours. Where have you been?" Ada threw her hands out in question.
"What's the matter? Didn't you get the text I sent?"
"I did but then I tried texting and calling you. You never answered. Where were you?"
"The Williams'," I said, pointing behind me. Ada glanced in the direction of their house then looked me dead in the eyes.
"Is that where you're coming from right now?"
"Yes," I answered, feeling a little shy.
"Well, don't make me wait. Tell me what happened last night!"
"I went over to meet Everett like I planned but he wasn't there. Only his father was," I began. Ada tittered covering her mouth. "It wasn't all dirty. I actually ended up telling him about what Everett was doing to me."
"Oh did he say he could help?" she asked, leaning in wrinkling her forehead. She seemed hopeful as she touched my shoulder. "That would be great, if so."
"Yes, he said he could help, but other things happened too."
"'Other things'?"
"Yeah, Mr. Williams and I had sex in Everett's bed then in the morning we were almost caught together."
Ada gasped and shook her head.
"Mila! You could get in so much trouble. What if Everett caught you for real? He'd ruin your life worse than he already is." Her voice was shrill as she widened her eyes in concern.
"No, it's okay Ada because there is good news. All his devices are broken now. He won't be able to blackmail me either.”
"That's great. I'm glad that he can't use your photos anymore but," she paused. "It isn't that simple." She held her head in distress.
"Ada, what's wrong?" I asked, pinning my brow. “Is there something you need to tell me?”
She stared at me with her eyebrows furrowed and said, "Everett has it out for you. He's having all his friends at school search for your 'new boyfriend'," she said, air quoting. "They aren't going to stop until they find out who he is. That means they're going to search everywhere, even at work."
She bounced back and forth on her feet nervously.
"That sounds really bad," I whispered. Rubbing my temples, I sensed a headache coming on. This was the last thing I needed, especially because my father knew all the instructors at school. I didn't want this rumor to get back to him. Why couldn't I just pass my classes and be left alone?
"What should I do?" I asked her. My best friend's advice was always sound. She'd help me think logically through this chaos. She blew a raspberry through her lips while she thought.
"I think maybe someone from the company could help you. It would be best if the group didn't invade Williams' turf. That would cause a big problem."
Someone from the company.... Robert came to mind. Maybe he'd be onboard with this. Then again, would he want to involve himself in such a boring activity?
After finishing my last two exams, I went to the company in the afternoon. I'd spoken to a new supplier a few days before to replace Mr. Adam. We got along well and they agreed to send down some of their samples. Those snacks were waiting for me in a box when I arrived.
As I unpacked them, several colleagues came into the break room curious about what I was doing.
"Hi, Mila. What do you have for us?" Lincoln asked, watching me place the goodies on the trays.
"Lincoln, these are samples and I need your opinion," I said. Several more people came in. "Everyone, please take some of these snacks and coffee sent over by our newest potential client."
"Nice, I need an afternoon pick-me-up," said Delia. Everyone gathered and grabbed their share. All I could hear was the sound of crinkling cellophane and clinking glasses. As they tasted the treats, they all looked pleased.
"Once you're finished with this, I have a questionnaire for you to fill out. Please let me know what you think of these new products. It will help in the decision process."
As I stacked the paper surveys next to the snacks, I left the break room. Just as I left the room I ran into Robert. He stopped short, flashing me a charming smile which I returned.
"What's going on in there?"
"Since we lost Mr. Adam's account, we're looking for a new contract. I just set up their samples in the break room. Have a taste and fill out a survey, pretty please." I batted my eyelashes at him in an overexaggerated way.
"Of course, Mila," he said with a smile but then it faded into a frown.
"What's wrong?" I asked, feeling concerned.
"It's just that I heard about how things went down with Mr. Adam. I'm really sorry that I didn't warn you ahead of time. He can be an ogre."
"Oh, it's totally fine," I said, flashing him a smile. "I think it was for the best." He nodded, seeming to feel slightly better as he managed a smile.
"Well, if you ever need anything..." he said, trailing off. He was just about to leave when I touched his arm.
"I do, actually."
