Chapter 1
Chapter 1
I was out shopping with my best friend Emily when we ran into my husband Hank and his mistress, making out in the car. My heart raced, and without a second thought, I rushed over and yanked the car door open, pulling the mistress into a hug as I stared into her wide, terrified eyes.
"What took you so long? Do you have any idea what I've been going through these past few years?" I said with a smirk.
She froze, hesitating to hug me back as she started crying softly. Hank was frozen, totally lost.
"How about we find a place to talk?" he stammered.
"Talk? Talk my ass! I'm getting a divorce!" I shot back, my excitement bubbling over. No one knew this, but for the last three years of our five-year marriage, I had been secretly hoping Hank would cheat on me. Now that my wish had come true, I couldn't contain my joy. Emily rushed over, ready to confront them, but I stopped her. With a polite smile, I apologized to them, who were both in complete shock.
"I'm sorry, I was just so excited I couldn't control myself. I didn't mean to disturb you. Please, continue," I said with a grin.
I waved them off, grabbed Emily's hand, and we ran off. The moment we turned the corner, I finally burst out laughing. Emily was so confused by my reaction, she didn't know how to respond at first. After a moment, she started tearing up.
"Yara, if you're upset, just cry. This is... kinda scary..." she stammered.
"Stop crying. You look ugly when you cry," I teased, wiping away her tears with a grin I couldn't hide. "I'm not upset, really. I'm actually so happy."
"You're lying. What kind of good wife would be happy to find out her husband's cheating?"
Well, I couldn't really argue with that. Maybe I wasn't such a "good wife" after all. Our marriage had been arranged before we were even born, thanks to our mothers being lifelong friends. Of course, our marriage wasn't based entirely on that, but it was a factor. We'd dated for a year before tying the knot, and Hank had treated me well, attentive to all my needs. But there was one flaw I couldn't overlook, even if it seemed minor to everyone else. The worst part was after we got married, we started a joint company, and my father had helped us build it up with his connections. Our business was successful because of it.
I'd tried to bring up divorce before, but my parents were completely against it. They thought I was insane for even considering it over something so small, not to mention the impact it would have on both families' friendships. So, I'd hoped Hank would mess up and give me an easy way out. But I would never do anything to sabotage my own marriage. Catching him cheating was entirely his fault.
Before Emily and I had gone too far, Hank called. After a moment of hesitation, I finally answered the phone.
"Honey, can we talk?" His voice oozed cautious charm, just like it always did when he tried to talk his way out of a mess.
I raised an eyebrow. "Are you done already?" There was silence on the other end. Realizing that might've been a bit much, I broke the tension. "Okay, where do you want to talk?"
"Let's go home. It'll be easier there. Can Selena come, too?"
I was taken aback. I didn't even know who Selena was at first, but when it clicked, I casually replied, "Sure, it'll be more convenient if we all meet at home." Hank sighed in relief, and I could practically hear the tension leave his body before I hung up.
"Yara, let me go with you, just in case they try to bully you," Emily said, looking worried, gripping my arm tightly.
I gave her a reassuring pat. "It's fine. Let's get this over with." We went straight to a law firm. I wanted to be fully prepared. After walking out with the divorce papers, I couldn't help but hum happily. Emily, sitting in the passenger seat, gave me a concerned look.
"Are you really that happy?"
I nodded enthusiastically. "Of course! Life is precious, but love? Love is even more valuable. If it's for freedom, I'd leave both behind in a heartbeat."
