Chapter 2
Chapter 2
It felt like the rug had been ripped out from beneath me, my entire reality jostled by Dane’s confession.
“Jack’s not the father. I haven’t slept with him in months. We broke up right after you and I …” My voice trailed off, my body shivering within the cold of the room. Why was it so hard for me to admit – to verbalize – what Dane and I had done? The evidence of it was growing in my abdomen, a life forming because of two people who meant nothing more to one another
besides a quick fuck.
Breathing out heavily, Dane rolled his shoulders back before placing the sonograms on my bed. He kept his eyes glued to the grainy black and white images when he said, “I guess there are going to be some changes in both of our lives.”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
Stripping his gaze off the pictures, he looked at me and smiled. It wasn’t a happy smile, though; it was more arrogant, more lazy than normal. His expression was that of a man who knew he was in control of himself and everybody around him.
“Well, since you’re pregnant with my baby, you’re going to be treating that fine body of yours right. You’re going to eat right, sleep right, exercise, stay out of clubs – basically, you’re going to make sure that kid comes out absolutely perfect.”
His words jolted me back, anger crawling up my spine at the thought of him attempting to control anything having to do with my life.
“What makes you think I’m keeping it?” I asked, a threat in my voice that I knew he would pickup.
His smile brightened and pissed me off even more. I narrowed my eyes on him and tried to ignore the way my heart beat faster in my chest.
“ Oh,” he chuckled. “You’re keeping it. I’ll be damned if I let you do anything to that baby that will hurt it. That’s my son or daughter in there and I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure I’m holding it in my arms in the next nine months …even if it means I have to strap you down to your bed and force feed you.”
Standing up from my bed, he left the sonograms on the mattress and walked towards the door. He had one hand on the knob when he turned to look back at me.
“I’ll see you in the morning, Luna. I just wanted to come in here tonight to let you know that the baby you’re carrying changes things between us. You’re mine while that kid is in your body. If you even look at another man, I’ll take you down for it, you understand me?”
I barked out a humorless laugh. “Yeah, well just be sure not to bring your whores around the house anymore, okay? Because they first time you fucking cheat on me, I’ll be running off where you can’t find me …or your kid.”
He smiled.
“ Chelsea wasn’t one of my whores. I haven’t fucked anybody since I’ve been fucking you. I only brought her over here to see if you’d get jealous – which you did. Don’t even try to tell me you’re not into me, little girl. You can’t hide the way you feel about me.”
He stepped out of my room before I could respond, closing the door behind him and walking towards his room. I listened to his footsteps until they disappeared and I grabbed my pillow, throwing it at the door with all the strength I had.
Dane was an absolute asshole and I had a feeling being pregnant with his kid wasn’t going to be fun.
I woke up to the smell of bacon wafting up from the kitchen, my stomach growling as soon as the scent registered in my brain. Sitting up in bed, I glanced at my alarm clock to see that it was only seven in the morning and I wondered why Dane would be up so early on a Saturday.
Throwing the covers off my feet, I ran into my bathroom to relieve myself and then pulled on a robe to cover up the threadbare t-shirt I was wearing. My stomach growled again, but instead of feeling hungry, I suddenly felt nauseous. I was never a breakfast person and the strong smell of food was making me queasy.
Moving slowly through the hall, I peeked downstairs and didn’t see anything amiss.
“Dane?” I called down, but there was no response, just the sound of pans and utensils being banged around in the kitchen.
I moved down the stairs slowly, trying to peek down to see if I could glance into the kitchen, but at the odd angle, I was
