Breakup Caused By a Car Accident

Chapter 12

Chapter 12

After that day, Kayne never contacted me again. I enjoyed the peace. With Thomas back, we were busier than ever in the lab. Some nights, I worked late into the evening. One rainy night, Thomas and I were the last ones left in the office. As I was heading out, a thunderclap rattled the building. I'd always been terrified of thunderstorms. The last time one hit, Kayne had rushed off to be with Freya, leaving me curled up on the sofa, completely scared. Since he wasn't there when I needed him most, I decided I didn't need him at all.

Just as I was about to leave, Thomas stood up. He turned off his computer and said, "I'll give you a ride. It's pouring out there."

He was right, so I didn't hesitate. Thomas was tall, quiet, and incredibly smart. My professor often praised him, calling him the best student he'd ever had. Whenever he attended conferences, he would proudly mention Thomas. Among the new generation of AI researchers, Thomas was a standout.

The lab was under renovation, so the car couldn't park in the underground garage. We had to cross the street to the open parking lot. As we stepped outside, the rain picked up. Thomas held the umbrella while I walked beside him. Since he was taller, he tilted the umbrella toward me, but his shoulders got soaked.

I looked up and said, "Thomas, your shoulders are wet."

He shrugged it off, "It's fine…" But before he could finish, someone yanked my arm, pulling me to the other side.

I turned to see Kayne. His arm wrapped around me, pulling me in close.

"You didn't answer my calls. I thought you were busy. So are you busy dating another guy?" he sneered, his tone biting.

I was furious, almost ready to hit him.

"Kayne, what's wrong with you?" I snapped.

He tugged at me to leave, but I didn't want to go. As I struggled, Thomas grabbed my other arm. His expression was dark, the umbrella still in his hand.

"If she didn't answer your calls, it means she doesn't want to talk to you," Thomas said coldly. "It's late, and we're keeping our distance. You have no right to misinterpret or mock her."

Kayne shot a furious look at Thomas.

"You don't get to interfere in our relationship. Let go of my girlfriend!" he snapped, pulling me tightly against him.

My arm started to hurt again, and I cried out, "Kayne, let go!"
