Chapter 6
Chapter 6
But then, Kayne immediately pulled away and even called me later to blame me. He probably wanted to break the deadlock between us today. "I know I should've called you to check on you. It's my fault," he said patiently, putting down what he was holding and hurrying to catch up with me.
"Olivia, to make up for it, I'll take you to my show, okay? Your arm's injured, and you can't go to work. This time, I'll only take you with me."
Kayne's show had always been a sensitive topic for me. When we first met, he wasn't very famous, and I had been there for him every step of the way. But he never wanted to make our relationship public. Even when I went to his concerts, he refused to tell his bandmates and staff that I was his girlfriend. I was just the girlfriend he refused to acknowledge. Why would I want to go to his show?
So I replied, "No, I'm busy."
"What are you busy with?" he asked.
I didn't want to bring up the past, but he thought he was doing me the greatest favor.
"You never made an effort to say hi to my friends when you saw them, and you didn't dress the way they did. How could I introduce you?"
I opened the bathroom door and said, "So, I'm not going. I don't want to meet them."
I didn't fit in with them. I liked my quiet life and focused on my research. If it weren't for Kayne, I wouldn't have dressed up in a way that didn't feel like me and gone to his show. Hearing my words, Kayne finally snapped. He slammed the bathroom door shut.
"I gave you a chance, but you didn't want it. Olivia, you're so boring!"
I washed my face and brushed my teeth, ignoring him. I had to get to bed early because I was going to the lab early the next morning. It had been a while since I'd done any research, so I was a little nervous. I kept running through the materials and experimental data in my mind. The whole night went by with me thinking about work, no time to think about Kayne.
When I opened the door early in the morning, he was back, looking a little off.
"You're going out even though your arm's injured?" he asked.
I nodded. "I have something to do."
He followed me. "I'll take you there."
He looked like he hadn't slept all night, or maybe he hadn't even gone home.
"No need. Go back to sleep," I said.
But Kayne insisted on following me. Grabbing my hand, he said, "I didn't go home all night or sleep. You don't care now, do you?"
