Chapter 6
Chapter 6
I stared at David in disbelief, struggling to wrap my mind around what he was saying.
"Mr. Leponce, what do you mean by this? I didn't make the mistake!"
But instead of showing any sign of reconsideration, David only looked more resolute, his gaze sharp and commanding.
"You bear responsibility in this, Tina. The best thing you can do now is apologize to the family."
I was floored, unable to believe David was actually spinning this lie.
"Mr. Leponce, didn't you see the video?"
David slammed his fist on the table with a force that made everyone jump, his voice ringing with fury.
"And what exactly is that video supposed to prove? This is your consultation room! I have no authority to question a patient's condition here. You didn't insist on proper testing, and now there's a medical incident. It's your fault, Tina!"
I was stunned. I thought the video evidence would be enough to expose their lies, but it was becoming clear that even David was on their side.
William strutted over, a smug grin plastered across his face like he'd already won.
"Tina, do you really think you can take us down with your little tricks? Do you think Mr. Leponce is going to side with you? No matter how much you argue, you'll never outshine Lucy's little tear in front of him."
The pieces clicked into place, and everything made sense. I'd seen William bend over backwards to impress Lucy since she'd joined the hospital, but I never realized how deep it went. She wasn't just some intern, she had connections. And now I could see it: no matter what evidence I had, the system was stacked against me from the start.
"Tina, I'm just an intern. I'm not even allowed to see patients alone. Who would believe you if you try to blame me?" Lucy said, her eyes wide and fake with innocence.
I couldn't help but scoff at her.
"Oh, now you remember you're ‘just an intern?' You've already killed a patient during your internship, and yet you don't feel a shred of guilt?"
William's face turned crimson with rage at how I spoke to Lucy.
"Tina, what's wrong with you? Go apologize to the family right now! If you do, I'll still be your boyfriend."
I looked at him with the kind of disdain that only a fool could inspire. Did he seriously think I was that desperate?
"Please. I'm not that pathetic. Go find someone else to ruin."
William fumed but, with David standing there, he held his tongue. But David wasn't done.
"This is the way it's going to be," he said, his tone cold and dismissive. "If you take responsibility for this, the hospital will handle the compensation, and we won't press charges."
I didn't hesitate. My voice was icy as I shot back.
"Sorry, Mr. Leponce, but I'm not taking the fall for something I didn't do."
In a fit of rage, William grabbed my phone and slammed it onto the floor with a satisfying crack.
"Tina, how could you be so cruel? Lucy's still so young! If she's held responsible, her whole life will be ruined!"
I glanced down at my shattered phone, then back at William, letting my expression drip with scorn. I knew exactly what he was trying to do, destroy the evidence. But what he didn't know was that I'd already uploaded the video to the cloud. His pitiful attempt to cover his tracks was laughable.
"Oh, so Lucy's life is ruined if she's held accountable? What about mine? Why should I sacrifice myself for you two? Besides, isn't this your fault to begin with? Don't worry, at worst, you'll go to jail. Lucy's just an intern, nothing serious will happen to her."
William's face drained of color at my words. David, ever the cold and calculating figure, added with a chilling edge,
"Don't exaggerate. You know that prescription was printed from your computer. Even if you bring in the authorities, this is still going to fall on you."
