Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Several of the patient's family members stormed toward William and Lucy, attacking them without mercy. They hit and kicked with raw, unbridled anger, and it took the security guards everything they had to pull them apart. The whole scene was chaotic, but I couldn't help but feel a sick sense of satisfaction watching them get what they deserved. The family didn't stop until they'd pounded them for a solid two minutes, leaving William and Lucy bruised and bloodied. Lucy was sobbing uncontrollably, while William glared at me like he wanted to rip me apart.
"Happy now? Lucy's covered in bruises. You satisfied?" William snarled.
I couldn't believe the nerve of him to even speak to me right now. The irony hit me like a ton of bricks. This man, who was supposed to be my boyfriend, was more concerned with defending Lucy than with the fact that a patient had died because of them. It made my blood boil. I'd spent years compromising, making excuses for him. But not anymore. This time, he wouldn't get away with a thing.
I met his angry stare with calm defiance. "You just got your asses kicked, but a person's dead because of you. No matter how you spin it, you had that coming. So why don't you focus on explaining yourself to the family instead of wasting my time?"
William's face darkened, and his voice dripped with venom. "So, you're saying you're not responsible for any of this?"
I almost laughed at how ridiculous he sounded. "Oh, trust me. I've got some responsibility alright. If I'd known better, I would've slapped some sense into you two a long time ago. Maybe then, an innocent person would still be alive."
Lucy's face twisted in anger, then she burst into louder sobs. "I'm just an intern! What do I know? Why should I be blamed when things go wrong?"
William quickly jumped in, defending her. "Exactly! I'm a doctor, but I'm human. We all make mistakes. If the patient chose to follow our advice, how is that our fault?"
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. How could someone with his position be this shameless?
"I warned you over and over again, but you ignored me. And now you're blaming the patient?" I shot back, my voice shaking with rage. "William, have you no shame? If patients knew everything, why would they even need doctors in the first place?"
The patient's family couldn't take it anymore. They collapsed to the floor, wailing in heartbreak. "Is there no justice left in this world? Not only did this man kill my husband, but now he's blaming him?!"
William opened his mouth to argue, but before he could, David Leponce, the director, silenced him with a single, icy glare. He walked over to the grieving family, his tone shifting to one of understanding.
"I can't begin to imagine your pain," David said softly. "Please, take a moment to gather yourselves. We will give you a full explanation of what happened, I promise."
The family, still trembling, nodded and left with the staff, finally calm enough to be escorted out. The crowd began to thin out, but David's expression hardened as he turned his gaze on me.
"Tina," he said coldly, his voice leaving no room for argument. "Pack your things, turn in your resignation, and get out. Now."
