Chapter 5
Chapter 5
I watched, numb to it all, as Logan ended the call, the weight of exhaustion dragging me down to my bones. I knew the story behind Rebecca and Logan's breakup all too well. Back in college, Rebecca's roommate had falsely accused her of stealing. With her reputation already hanging by a thread and her aloof nature, not a single person in their class of dozens stood up for her. The rumors spread like wildfire, even reaching the school's administration. To protect the school's image, Rebecca was expelled. Logan, who had nothing back then, was the only one who believed in her. He spent countless hours, delaying his graduation by an entire year, gathering evidence to clear her name. After a relentless year of fighting, Logan proved Rebecca's innocence. But because of the scandal, her family sent her abroad, and they were forced to part ways.
The difference between loving someone and not loving them was like night and day. I had been fooling myself, making excuses for why Logan didn't love me, like some pathetic clown deceiving herself from the start.
Rebecca stood there, barely containing her rage. "Fay, while you were missing, Logan was so worried about you. He's done everything for you, and this is how you repay him?"
"Worried about me?" I turned my gaze toward Logan, the cold smile on my lips. "When I was missing, wasn't he busy being all lovey-dovey with you?"
"Don't you dare twist the truth, Fay! You're the one who's in the wrong here, and now you're trying to flip the blame!" Rebecca's voice was dripping with venom, her anger flaring when she realized I was the one who made the call.
"Logan," she spat, "a woman like her, full of lies and deceit, doesn't deserve to be your wife!"
Just then, George's call came through. Logan picked up the phone with a stern look on his face. Rebecca immediately jumped in, "Wait, turn on the speaker! The evidence will speak for itself. Let's see how Fay tries to talk her way out of this!"
Rebecca shot me a defiant look as Logan switched the call to speakerphone.
"Mr. Brooks, Ms. Tautou was missing for those two days…" George's voice came through, hesitating for a second before continuing. "She was trapped in a landslide, buried under rubble for two days. During that time, she called only two numbers. One was to the rescue team, and the other was your number. She called you 931 times."
Logan's face went pale as it dawned on him, Rebecca had asked him a question during those days when I was missing. At the time, she'd just finished chemotherapy, and Logan had blocked my number to avoid upsetting her. What he didn't know was that Rebecca, using his phone, had accidentally unblocked me.
This small detail seemed trivial to Logan, something he'd overlooked. It was only now that he realized I had called him during my disappearance.
Logan hung up the phone. The room was silent, suffocating, before he spoke in a voice barely above a whisper.
"Why didn't you say anything?"
"What would saying it change?" I replied, my voice cold. "Saying it would only make you feel better about yourself, and I won't let you off the hook that easily."
I met his eyes, each word sharp as I spoke: "Logan, I'm actually relieved. Thank goodness I didn't really have your child. Otherwise, that would have been so nauseating."
"Fay!" Logan shouted, his face twisted with rage. "You've got some nerve!"
