Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Logan looked flustered. After a moment of hesitation, he finally agreed to come with me to see Rebecca.
When we entered her hospital room, Rebecca was throwing a tantrum, clearly upset that she hadn't seen Logan in a few days. She had just thrown a glass, and as we walked in, a shard grazed my arm. Logan immediately stepped in front of me, shielding me from the glass.
Rebecca's face went pale when she saw me. "Logan, why is she here?" she demanded, her voice sharp.
I stepped out from behind Logan, a faint smile curling on my lips. "Logan and I are getting married. We came to tell you."
Rebecca was so overwhelmed that she fainted right there, causing a scene in the room. I calmly waited outside the emergency room with Logan while Rebecca was treated. Logan kept glancing at me, but I pretended not to notice. He knew exactly what would happen when he brought me here today, yet despite everything, he chose me. At least with me, he would have someone by his side who could be there for him, healthy, until he was eighty years old.
Logan had always been incredibly selfish, like a businessman picking the most suitable product to take home. But I wasn't a commodity to be exploited.
Five hours later, Rebecca finally stabilized and came out of danger. When she woke up, the first thing she saw was me. Logan wasn't in the room, so Rebecca dropped the act.
"Fay," she spat, her voice dripping with venom, "every night, I imagined you being pushed away, bloodied and broken. Why didn't you just die that day?"
I met her gaze, unbothered, and casually sliced an apple with a fruit knife. "If I had died, who would send you to hell?"
Rebecca's face twisted with anger. "I refuse to accept this! Just because I went abroad for a few years, why did you end up by Logan's side? I should've been Mrs. Brooks!"
I couldn't help but find her words absurd. She saw only the glamorous side of Logan, never considering the hardships I had endured with him.
"If you hadn't stolen from your roommates, maybe you'd have had the chance to be Mrs. Brooks long ago," I said, my words sharp.
Rebecca froze, her expression faltering. "That's nonsense! Logan proved I was innocent!"
"Do you know who went to your roommates, begging them to clear your name?" I placed the apple on the table, letting the silence linger. Rebecca's eyes widened as realization set in. "It was me," I continued coldly. "I went behind Logan's back, speaking to your roommates every day, convincing them to let you off the hook."
Rebecca stared at me, stunned. "I pitied Logan back then," I added, my tone chilling. "I saw him struggling, pleading with your roommates for mercy. They eventually gave in, worn out by my persistence. It had been too long since the incident, and they didn't want to prolong the conflict, so they spared you. But I know the truth. You really did steal from them."
Rebecca's face twisted in a mix of anger and guilt. "They pressured me! They flaunted their cosmetics and jewelry in front of me every day, rubbing it in my face!" she shouted, but before she could finish, Logan appeared in the doorway.
I had said what I needed to say. With my objective achieved, I turned and left. But as I walked out, I heard Rebecca's heart monitor start to beep erratically. This time, she couldn't be saved.
After Rebecca's funeral, Logan approached me again, this time with a desperate desire to marry me. I studied him, then slapped him hard across the face.
"Logan," I said coldly, "you don't seriously think I'd still want to be with you, do you?" My voice was empty, like I was watching a tree or a cloud, no emotional ripples inside.
I left the city where I had lived with Logan for five years. Before I left, I sent the video of Logan forcibly drugging me to his business rival. I heard he went bankrupt soon after, losing billions of dollars. I watched him rise and fall, from riches to rags, but I felt no satisfaction from it.
In the end, Logan and I both lost. It was a mutual defeat.
