Chapter 39 She Looks Happy
Chapter 39 She Looks Happy
Jovanny flipped through the files.
Then they went to a wet market. Gracelyn pulled over and asked Jovanny, "I'm going to pick up some groceries now. Would you like to go home or go with me? It's only a few minutes' walk from home."
Jovanny was still reading the files. "I'm okay with both," said he without looking up.
She was curious why he was so attentive to her work. "Are you interested?"
"Yes." Then he added, "It's total garbage. I haven't seen anything like this."
Gracelyn was surprised.
She had read the previous proposals but she didn't think they were that bad.
"You work in accounts. How do you know anything about product proposals?"
Jovanny closed the files and looked up at Gracelyn. "Not much."
The corners of her mouth twitched, and she continued, "Seriously? Then why do you call it garbage?"
"It's the truth."
Luckily, Gracelyn didn't write that. His comment was very mean.
She took off her helmet, got off, and looked at him seriously. "Then tell me what makes it garbage?"
Jovanny gave the files back to her and said, "It's just garbage."
He reminded Gracelyn of what Aiyana had said about those men who felt too good about themselves.
In Gracelyn's eyes, Jovanny now was no different from them.
Seeing her expression change, he asked, "You wrote that?"
Gracelyn choked and forgave him. "Not me. I guess this is even better than mine.
"I had no clue what I should put on my proposal, so I brought the files home. Forget it. I'm going to buy groceries."
Jovanny also got off and stared at her sad face. "Look, your colleagues just muddled through. The market analysis is skimpy, the budget can't cover the development, the operation strategy is not detailed enough, and the market risk and competition risk are not accurately assessed."
Gracelyn paused.
Jovanny continued, "At least from these proposals, I can't see anything that can promise expected returns. Thus, they were denied."
Gracelyn came back to her senses after a gaze at him. He actually knew a thing about her work.
"Then any advice for me?"
Jovanny glanced at the files and asked, "Do you know why they made the mistakes?"
"Why?"
"They only have a superficial understanding of games and technology. The proposals reveal that weakness. Though some of the ideas are creative, they won't materialize within your company.
"Take the rendering, for example. Do you know how many floating-point operations it takes? Even if you guys manage it in the company, it's still too hard for most PCs. Besides, it's a simulation game, so high-quality pictures are a must. Without this, the game is pointless.
"Imagine this. Will you buy a game that fucks up your PC?"
Gracelyn shook her head. That would depress her mood for gaming, no matter how fabulous the game was. She wouldn't buy a more powerful computer just for a game.
"There are other problems, with things like cache and computing power. In short, these proposals are garbage!"
Now Gracelyn was convinced. At least, Jovanny told her why.
What she did not know was that he never wasted time on such things in the company. He would throw substandard plans directly into the trash can.
And he wouldn't explain so patiently.
That was the attitude Gracelyn's company adopted. They wanted workers to get work done and pick up things themselves.
That was why proposals were dismissed without feedback.
And this explained why it took so long to launch this project and Allyson gave Gracelyn the job.
"I think I have a clue now," said Gracelyn with a nod. She seemed to be enlightened.
She read the previous proposals again and thought, "They are not so good."
"You did learn something abroad. Impressive."
Her compliment didn't surprise Jovanny. He just said coolly, "So let's pick up some groceries."
"Yes." Gracelyn smiled happily.
She locked her bike and they went into the wet market.
This was Jovanny's first time in a wet market. He was overwhelmed by the chaotic place.
A lot of people went here after work. The place smelt of meat, seafood, sweat, and other things. It was unpleasant.
Gracelyn came to a vegetable stand and picked up an asparagus lettuce and asked the price.
"Half a dollar per kilo."
"Oh, it's cheaper," Gracelyn said, then picked a few more, and asked the stand owner to wrap them up.
Gracelyn went to buy some other vegetables and asked for free scallions.
Then she said to Jovanny, "The owner always gives his customers herbs like this for free. You can ask for others if you don't want scallions."
Jovanny nodded and remained silent. He took the vegetables from Gracelyn.
When he watched her walking around the market, his mind wandered.
The hustle and bustle grabbed him. He felt like he was in another world from the glamorous and neat one he was familiar with.
This one was vigorous and felt real.
Gracelyn bargained with a butcher shop and bought some meat.
Bargaining would never happen in a supermarket.
The way she bargained for this tiny discount made her look like a philistine. Jovanny didn't understand why she did so.
But she smiled so brightly when the owner agreed.
Gracelyn looked so happy.
A person's happiness wasn't decided by what they got or if their desires were met.
It was something else. A person who had never left their comfort zone took the opportunity to see the wider world and the greater temptation.
But they didn't forget who they were, lived their life the way it used to be, and were content with it.
That was happiness.
Jovanny wasn't sure she had such happiness, but he knew she was happy at this moment.
Outside the market, Gracelyn smiled, "Jovanny, all this cost me only 10 dollars. It's enough for the next three days. Good deal, right? Much cheaper than takeout."
They stood in front of the market. Inside was the hustle and bustle and outside were these colorful neon lights.
She was talking about money-saving tricks proudly with her shining eyes.
