My Fiancé's Ex Wears the Same Wedding Dress on Our Big Day

Chapter 3

"Rose Thompson! So you're skipping the movie with me to meet some other guy?" Jack's voice was sharp, filled with disbelief. "How could you do this? What about our child?"

I looked at the shattered vase on the floor, but before I could get a word in, Lily interrupted, playing the peacekeeper.

"Jack, calm down. Let's just talk about this calmly," she said, her tone sugary sweet.

Then she added, with that usual smugness, "We can't really blame Rose, can we? After all, her own mother, "

I didn't let her finish. I grabbed a box of tissues and threw them straight at her. She could trash talk me all she wanted, but my mother was off-limits.

The tissues hit her square on, and her skin immediately turned red. Jack rushed over, concern written all over his face.

"Are you okay, Lily?" he asked, his voice soft and soothing.

Lily gave him that wide-eyed, wounded look and turned it up to a whole new level of drama. Jack looked back at me, his fury reigniting.

"Rose Thompson, I can't believe you! Even if what Lily said isn't true, you can't just hit her like that! Don't you know that, "

I cut him off before he could finish. "So, you know what she said isn't true?"

For a brief moment, Jack's face faltered, but it was gone in an instant. He straightened up and said, "Yes, but hitting someone is never okay. Apologize to Lily right now, or we're getting a divorce!"

A chill ran through me. I stared at him, disbelief heavy in my chest, but then I decided I was done playing his game.

"Jack, I have an abortion appointment tomorrow. Will you come with me?" I asked, the words hanging in the air.

He scoffed, like I had just told a joke. "Rose Thompson, I've told you before. You can't use pregnancy as an excuse for your behavior. Apologize to Lily now! Or we're done!"

A bitter laugh escaped me. I reached for the divorce papers I'd prepared earlier and slapped them down on the table with a cold finality.

"Fine. Let's get divorced, right now."

Jack's eyes fell to the papers, and I saw the color drain from his face.
