Chapter 6
Chapter 6
I spent a month recovering in the hospital, with my parents and brother visiting me daily, constantly by my side. Just as I had predicted, Sophie reached out to my dad, asking for financial support. When he answered the phone, her sickly sweet voice echoed through, "Dad, I'm getting married tomorrow. Will you officiate?"
My dad almost lost it right then and there, but I gave him a warning look to keep him calm. He answered curtly, "I'm only your godfather. Just letting me know is enough, I'm not attending any wedding festivities. I'm not feeling well."
Sophie paused, then played the sympathy card. "Since my real dad died, you and Mom have been like parents to me. I've always thought of you as my real father." Her overly sugary tone made both me and my dad want to gag. Sophie was trying to paint my dad as her savior, even implying she wouldn't marry unless he attended.
Dad's anger flared, but I managed to calm him down. After hanging up, he tossed his phone into the trash, as though the mere sight of it was contaminated. By now, I had plenty of ways to make Sophie and Jason regret everything they'd done, but I wanted them to feel a glimmer of hope first, so I could crush it completely.
Then came the invitation to Jason's wedding, smugly accompanied by his voice on the phone, "It's a high-class affair, but don't feel out of place. I've sent you ten thousand to buy a suitable evening gown." Sitting in the VIP section of a luxury boutique, I couldn't help but scoff at his offer. Ten grand wouldn't even cover a sleeve in this store.
Jason had really splurged on this wedding, booking South City's most luxurious hotel. Dressed in an expensive suit with his hair slicked back, he was playing the part of a tycoon. As luxury cars pulled up, he nervously asked Sophie, "How do I look? We have to secure that investment today, or the company's done."
Sophie reassured him with a pat on the back, "Don't worry, my dad adores me. He'll agree to the financing as soon as I ask."
I watched them with barely contained laughter as their carefully constructed world was about to implode. When the car stopped, Jason jumped out, eager to impress, "Mr. Thompson!"
But my dad just stiffened, saying nothing. Misreading the silence, Jason's face paled, and panic flashed across it. Sophie, trying to save face, quickly grabbed my dad's arm, "Dad, remember Jason? Let's go inside."
But my dad shrugged her off and helped me out of the car instead. "Emily, let's go," he said coolly.
When Sophie and Jason saw me step out of the car, their faces went white. "Why are you here with my father-in-law?" they blurted in disbelief.
I flashed a sly smile, linking my arm through my dad's. "Just hitching a ride."
They clearly didn't buy my casual excuse. Inside, Jason dragged me into an empty room, his face contorting with fury. "Emily, have you lost it? Are you really seeing my father-in-law just to get back at me and Sophie?"
I couldn't help but laugh out loud at his ridiculous conclusion. "You really are an idiot," I shot back, mocking him without mercy.
Jason's eyes darkened, and his gaze shifted to my flat stomach. "You wouldn't abort the kid for me, but now you're doing it for some old rich guy? Guess you're a gold-digger after all."
The mention of my baby sent a cold shiver down my spine. "Shut your mouth!" I snapped, barely holding back my rage. "You and your son are the ones who hurt me and the baby, forcing me to sign those divorce papers, pushing me to the ground. Remember the nurse calling you about the accident?"
Jason paled, his defensiveness quickly rising to the surface. "How is that my fault? You didn't sign the papers!"
I slapped him hard across the face, my disgust overflowing. "Being married to you is worse than having a criminal record!"
As I turned to walk away, he grabbed my arm, desperation in his eyes. "One more word to my father-in-law and you'll never see your son again."
That threat would've terrified me once, but not anymore.
Just then, John barged in and saw Jason's hand on me. Without a second thought, he threw a punch square in Jason's face.
"What's wrong with you?" he shouted.
Jason yelped, clutching his face, his expression twisting in pain. He looked from my protective brother to me, his face warping in fury. "Who's this lover of yours? Emily, you move on fast!"
John's frown deepened, and he punched Jason again. Jason, dizzy and overwhelmed, tried to fight back but was no match for my brother.
The commotion drew the attention of the other guests. Sophie rushed over, embarrassed, trying to help Jason up.
"Jason, what's going on? Why are you fighting with my brother?"
Jason, still reeling, pointed at me and John, his accusations wild. "Emily's screwing two men at once!"
Sophie froze, her eyes wide with shock. "You what...?"
Then my dad stepped in, his voice calm but filled with authority. Sophie tried to spin things in her favor, "Dad, this woman is causing a scene at my wedding. If you hadn't brought her, I would've thrown her out already."
I smirked and shot back, "Confused much? This is your dad?"
Sophie sneered, her voice dripping with arrogance. "Of course. Out of respect for my dad and my brother, I'll let this slide. Now, get out."
My mom stepped forward, taking my hand. Her voice was thick with sarcasm. "These are the losers you warned us about? And why is my dear 'goddaughter' Sophie involved in this mess?"
The word goddaughter was heavily emphasized.
Sophie's face drained of color in an instant.
