Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Dazed from the punches, Jason stumbled backward, pointing a shaky finger at me. "What lies are you telling my mother-in-law? What's all this about trash and cheaters?" He shot a desperate look at my mom, trying to play the victim. "Mrs. Thompson, she's lost it. Don't believe her."
My mom snorted, unfazed. "Cut the crap. Your sweet talk doesn't work on me."
Jason's face flushed bright red with embarrassment. I gripped my mom's hand tightly, my voice cold. "We're divorced, Jason. Stop pretending."
It took him a moment, but then the realization seemed to hit him. "Wait, you made her your godmother?" He blinked, confused.
I scoffed, my tone dripping with sarcasm. "Godmother? She's my real mother."
The room went silent, and I could feel the weight of everyone's gaze. Growing up, I'd always felt like an outsider with my adoptive parents, who claimed I looked like a late aunt of theirs. I never thought much of it. But standing next to my mom now, the resemblance was undeniable. There was no mistaking it.
Back then, she'd been so caught up in household chores and raising us kids that she hadn't had time to focus on her own appearance. Now, though, she radiated grace and poise.
Jason, clearly flustered, turned to Sophie. "Then who the hell are you?"
Sophie, trembling and clutching her stomach, managed to stammer, "Jason, my stomach hurts. Please, take me to the hospital."
Jason, now furious, yanked his hand away from her. "Sophie, if Emily is the real heiress, then what the hell is your story?"
For the first time, Jason lost his cool. His usual charm vanished, and Sophie's eyes welled up with tears.
"Jason, listen, I'm also a daughter of a tycoon. I may not be blood-related, but I can still get the funding. Trust me."
John cut her off with a sneer, his voice dripping with disdain. "Forget the financing. It's never happening."
Jason's face dropped, and the realization hit him hard. His company, his entire life's work, was about to go under without the promised funding. In desperation, he grabbed John's hand, pleading, "Sir, I was Emily's husband. Let's talk this over."
His audacity was staggering. I pulled John back. "Jason, we're divorced. And wasn't today supposed to be your wedding day?"
Jason's face crumpled. "Why didn't you tell me your parents were wealthy?!"
I rolled my eyes, amused by his ignorance. Even now, he was still blaming me.
"I was planning to tell you when I got back from my trip. But then I walked in on you and Sophie, " I paused, the memory of that moment still stinging, ", and you started pushing for a divorce."
"Honestly, I'm relieved we're done. Now I see who you really are."
With that, I tried to walk away, but he grabbed my arm again, his desperation palpable. "Emily, I'm sorry. Hit me, yell at me, just let me explain. It was all just stress from the business."
But cheating was the one line I couldn't forgive, no matter the excuse.
Unmoved, Jason continued, now pointing the finger at Sophie. "It was all her fault! She seduced me! The authenticity check was a setup, she planned everything to make you sign the divorce papers!"
So, he admitted it.
I stared at him, cold fury in my eyes. "Now that you've confessed to your crime, there's nothing left to say. The police can handle you."
Sophie's panic set in. "How is this my fault? You're the one who faked everything! You came after me because I said I was a tycoon's daughter!"
"If you hadn't lied about securing the funding, I never would've left my husband! It's your fault!" Jason snapped, shoving Sophie.
The force of the shove sent Sophie stumbling backward, her belly colliding with a table corner. A sharp scream tore from her lips as she doubled over, clutching her stomach. "My baby! I'm bleeding!"
The sight of the blood made Jason's face go pale, and his panic was palpable. He immediately rushed to her, scooping her up and rushing her out of the room.
