Chapter 8
Chapter 8
The moment I stepped out of the cemetery, I called the police.
Then I dialed the mayor's hotline and filed a formal complaint against the cemetery manager. I wasn't going to let this be swept under the rug.
When I saw Timothy and Mia again at the police station the next day, he looked at me like I'd just stabbed him in the chest.
"Evie… do we really have to go this far?" he said, his voice low and strained. "I know we messed up. I've already apologized. What more do you want from me? Would it make you feel better if I went to jail? Are you really that cruel?"
I laughed bitterly in my head.
"I'm cruel?" I looked him dead in the eyes. "You dug up my grandfather's grave, Timothy. And you're asking me if I'm cruel?"
He flinched, his expression turning stiff with disbelief. "So this is revenge? That's what this is about?"
"Don't twist this," I said coldly. "You forced my hand. The moment you ditched me at our wedding to go sign a marriage certificate with Mia, this, " I gestured between us, ", was over."
He looked like he wanted to speak, but I didn't give him the chance.
"You're selfish, arrogant, and so damn full of yourself. You don't know what love is, and you don't deserve anyone's."
I'm done. I'm ending this, right here.
Timothy ran a hand through his hair, frustrated, trying to keep it together.
"Evie, what do you want me to do?" he asked, exasperated. "Tell me. I told you, I didn't abandon you. I just needed some time! Why are you being so unreasonable?"
"I already admitted I made a mistake, okay? I said I was sorry. Isn't that enough? Will that finally make you happy?"
Happy?
The moment my grandfather's eyes closed for good, there was no going back. Ending a ten-year relationship wasn't easy, it ripped something out of me, but I didn't regret it. Not for a second.
I met his gaze without flinching. My voice was calm and final.
"Timothy, I don't need your apology. I want justice."
"And I won't settle for mediation today."
