Chapter 9
Chapter 9
That night, Timothy and Mia were locked up for fifteen days for unauthorized grave digging. It was a shame I couldn't gather enough evidence to prove they did it on purpose. If I had, they would've been facing at least three years in jail.
Half a month later, I got a call from Timothy's friend.
"Evie, I know you're mad at Timothy, but how could you send him to jail?" he asked. "Timothy's been drinking a lot, saying you broke his heart. He's been crying like crazy!"
So, he cried? I thought, coldly. That's great to hear. He hurt me, so why should he get to live without consequences?
"If you're okay with someone digging up your family's grave, you can keep blaming me. Otherwise, just stay out of it," I shot back.
"What do you mean?" his friend asked, sounding confused.
I rubbed my brow and explained, "Timothy dug up my grandfather's grave and scattered his ashes. Why shouldn't I send him to jail for that? What would you do if you were me?"
Timothy's friend sighed heavily and tried to reason with me. "But Timothy's gonna get sick if he keeps drinking like this! You two are a couple, and couples should take care of each other. You need to go get him!"
"Get him where?" I scoffed. "You've called the wrong person. His wife is Mia Adrian."
"What the hell? Didn't you and Timothy get married? Even if he ran off halfway, you're still his wife!"
Turns out, no one knew that Timothy and Mia had already gotten their marriage certificate, not even Timothy's best friend.
That day, Timothy had left me at the altar to go marry Mia and get the certificate.
His friend was floored. "F*ck! Is Timothy out of his mind? I can't believe he did that!"
Amid the chaos, I could hear Timothy's muffled voice in the background. "Evie... Evie... I'm sorry..."
I remained calm as I spoke into the phone. "Don't call me about his problems again."
I hung up and stared at the phone, lost in thought. I had loved Timothy for ten years, believing we would be together forever. But in the end, it was me who walked away. When he had acute hepatitis, I donated my liver to save him without a second thought. I truly believed nothing could separate us, that our love would survive anything.
But I'd forgotten that time changes everything. And so do people's hearts.
