Plot Twist, The 'Dead' Ex is Thriving

Chapter 17 Preparing for the Business Trip

Chapter 17 Preparing for the Business Trip

To avoid running into those two in Harbor City, I logged into my long-unused WeChat that evening and clicked into a certain group chat.

The group had over twenty members and was always lively. I had no interest in scrolling through the lavish lifestyles of these privileged young masters and misses, so I searched directly for their names.

Over the past two years, Vincent Montgomery had thoroughly ruined Emily Carter's reputation—though he wasn't much better off himself. A year and a half ago, Emily had publicly claimed to be pregnant with his child, tearfully pleading her case to the media. The scandal had made Vincent lose favor with the elders of his family.

Less than a month later, Emily suffered a fall at home and lost the baby. Soon after, she and her mother, Sophia Carter, were cast out of the Harrison family. The two left the capital and moved to a second-tier city. But with Vincent and Daniel Harrison keeping tabs on them, their lives couldn't have been easy.

From the group's conversations, I learned that Vincent was currently on a business trip in Shanghai, while Daniel's whereabouts were unknown. Finding no other useful information, I logged out.

Five days later, I boarded a flight to Harbor City with Linda and two other colleagues. The trip would last a week—surely I wouldn't be unlucky enough to cross paths with those two.

Once in Harbor City, I planned to stay in the hotel unless absolutely necessary. I wouldn't take a single step outside otherwise.

On the night before our departure, I attended the farewell dinner at a prestigious club. As I entered, I felt someone's gaze on me—but when I turned to look, no one was there. A sense of unease settled over me.

Midway through the meal, I excused myself to the restroom, grabbed my bag, and prepared to slip away. To be cautious, I left through the back door.

The streets of Harbor City were crowded, and I stood under the shade of a tree, waiting for a cab.

Then—suddenly—the sound of hurried footsteps approached from behind.
