Chapter 16
Chapter 16
I settled down in a small country in the West.
Life here moved at a leisurely pace. Every day, I woke up naturally, went grocery shopping, and cooked at home. After meals, I would sketch designs or work on things that interested me. In my free time, I took walks, clearing my mind completely.
Occasionally, news from back home still reached me.
For instance, my "death" made headlines.
Or how Vincent Montgomery and Daniel Harrison were sparing no expense to destroy Emily Carter and her mother. Daniel exposed online that Emily's award-winning work was plagiarized from his late sister's designs, presenting a series of damning evidence. Overnight, Emily—once celebrated—became a social pariah.
Not only that, Vincent and Daniel reclaimed all the expensive gifts they had given her. Emily's mother, Sophia Carter, was exposed as a mistress who had broken up a marriage, and Emily herself was branded a love child.
Reading about them now, I felt nothing.
The sun rose, its golden light spilling over the land.
This was my rebirth.
After a month here, I started job hunting—under my new identity.
Nine days later, I was hired.
Most of my colleagues were friendly and welcoming. My boss, Linda, was a stylish, beautiful woman who helped me immensely at work. Gradually, I found my footing in the company.
Nearly two years passed in a blink.
I made new friends and even had a few admirers, though I had no interest in romance at the moment.
I signed up for the International Design Award, currently in the preliminary rounds. The event would be held in a nearby country, drawing significant attention. I had prepared extensively for it.
One day, Linda informed me that the company intended to collaborate with a firm in Harbor City and wanted to send me on the business trip.
She looked up from her computer. "You're fluent in Chinese, and with your background, communication will be smoother."
I tried to decline. "But such an important assignment—how can I handle it?"
That country held Vincent and Daniel. I didn't want to step foot there—not even Harbor City. I needed to avoid any possibility of crossing paths with them.
Linda gave me a reassuring smile. "The delegation list has already been submitted. I'll be going with you. Don't worry—nothing will go wrong."
