Chapter 7
Chapter 7
"What does she have to do with the grudges of the older generation?"
Emily Carter covered her face, sobbing softly. Vincent Montgomery stepped forward, shielding her in his arms. "Lina Harrison, you've gone too far!"
"Besides, it's just a cheap necklace. Here, Emily, let's give it to her." He yanked the necklace off and flung it to the ground. "Come on, I'll buy you a better, more expensive one right now."
Daniel Harrison glanced at me and sighed. "Lina, why must you always be so unreasonable? Look at the mess you've made."
"Emily is already suffering, yet you still can't tolerate her."
"As a woman, why can't you learn to be kinder?"
"And about the design draft—Lina, you've already gained so much. There will be plenty of chances for you to win awards in the future."
"But Emily is different. She needs this award to establish herself in the industry."
"Only then can the Montgomery family slowly accept her."
He reached out to pull me up. "Lina..."
"Get lost." I shoved his hand away and suddenly laughed.
"Brother."
This was the last time I would ever call him that.
And the last time I would ever look at him so intently.
"You'll get what's coming to you."
Daniel frowned but couldn't meet my gaze. "Lina, I'll make it up to you someday."
With that, he hurried off in the direction Vincent and Emily had gone.
I crouched down, picked up the necklace, and pressed it against my chest, motionless for a long time.
I didn't cry. Not a single tear fell.
Turns out, when sorrow cuts deep enough, even tears refuse to come.
The sun sank below the horizon.
Everything was swallowed by that blood-red dusk.
The weather forecast said temperatures had been rising for days.
The air was dry—fire hazards lurked everywhere.
