Chapter 7
Chapter 7
Liam Hawthorne summoned my parents to the estate again.
The brief spark of hope I had felt quickly died down. They wouldn't admit to anything, not a chance.
When my parents saw Nina Dawson tied up, their faces turned pale with concern.
"Mr. Hawthorne, did Sarah upset you? Couples argue sometimes. I'll have her apologize," my father said anxiously, practically begging.
When they'd married me off to Liam, they'd practically made it clear that if I ended up dead, it would be a small price to pay as long as it helped him release his anger. They'd never hold him accountable for anything.
Yet now, seeing Nina tied up, they were beside themselves with worry.
Their reaction made Liam pause. Suspicion flickered in his eyes. "Your daughter's been replaced, and you didn't notice?"
For a split second, panic flashed across their faces, but they quickly recovered and responded in unison, "You're overthinking it, Mr. Hawthorne. We'd never mistake our own daughter."
Of course. This was their precious child. How could they ever confuse her with me?
Even Liam couldn't have imagined that, by this point, I was probably reduced to nothing but a broken mess.
Liam studied them carefully for a moment before saying, "I'm going to need you two to do a paternity test with this woman."
That suggestion was like a gift to my parents, and they smiled smugly.
"That's a great idea! No amount of words can prove it like a DNA report," my father said, relieved.
A doctor stepped forward, collecting hair samples from all three of them.
By the time the results came back, it was nearly dawn. As expected, the test confirmed Nina was biologically their daughter.
Liam frowned, visibly unsettled by the report.
With tears in her eyes, Nina stepped forward and linked her arm with his. "Liam, I'm Sarah. Is someone trying to plant doubts in your mind?"
Liam took her chin in his hand, scrutinizing her face.
I had to admit, the cosmetic surgeons the Dawson family hired had done an impressive job. Even with my spirit hovering just inches away from her, I couldn't spot a single difference.
Liam didn't find anything either, but he reached up and removed the amulet necklace from around her neck.
With a furrowed brow, he left the room and headed for his study.
My parents, too nervous to stay, quietly advised Nina to be careful before slipping away.
