Sister Took My Face... But Not My Husband's Secrets

Chapter 8

Chapter 8

After Mr. Barrett escorted my parents out, he joined Liam in the study.

"Sir, while Mrs. Hawthorne may have changed recently, the DNA test doesn't lie. You should rest easy."

Liam sat up straight in his chair, head tilted back, eyes closed. His voice was slow and heavy. "Mr. Barrett, ever since that pendant broke, I haven't had a single peaceful night."

"Do you think it's possible that she's… gone, just like my parents?"

Mr. Barrett was visibly shaken, quickly waving his hands in protest. "Sir, don't speak like that! I've been with the Hawthorne family since your father's time. They were good people, and they're watching over you. You have their blessings."

Liam opened his eyes, a bitter smile tugging at his lips. "Good people end up with ruined families. Everything I've built, I've built with ruthlessness."

"From the outside, the Hawthorne family looks perfect, but it's all built on money."

"My mother, in her final moments, made me promise to restore the Hawthorne name. It's tragic that now that I've finally done it, there's no one left to celebrate with."

"And now… even she's gone. Everyone's gone…"

I stood beside him, feeling the weight of his sorrow, even though we were in different forms. His loneliness radiated through me.

Mr. Barrett wiped a tear from his eye and called him "Young Master," like he used to. "That pendant breaking might've been a coincidence."

Liam narrowed his eyes and took a deep breath. "There are things I need to face, whether I want to or not."

"Mr. Barrett, I need you to look into Nina Dawson's recent activities and dig into Sarah's past. The Dawsons said they sent her abroad for medical treatment, but when she married me, she didn't seem any healthier, and she couldn't even read basic English."

"When I visited her parents with her recently, it was clear they dote on her, but in the two years before, they barely spoke. Something doesn't add up."

"And one more thing, when Sarah was a child, she had a fractured left big toe. I saw the old injury in her medical records when we first married. But now? It's gone. This isn't the same person."

Liam continued to list the discrepancies, and I was shocked by how closely he had observed me.

Mr. Barrett, too, seemed to sense something was off, and his expression turned serious. He reassured Liam and promised to investigate further.

Liam ran his fingers over the amulet, and to my surprise, my spirit became tethered to him through it.
