Chapter 24
Chapter 24
The other end of the line was dead silent.
Ethan Sullivan's voice was barely a whisper, trembling with desperation.
"I was wrong... I was so wrong. What I did with Victoria was unforgivable, and I’ve taken care of everything with the child." His voice cracked. "Just come back to me. I’ll do anything."
Only the faint hum of static answered him.
"Sophia, please—"
The call cut off before he could finish.
Frantic, he redialed, but all he heard was the cold, automated tone.
His world crumbled before his eyes.
Just then, his mother’s call came through.
"Mom..." His voice was raw. "Help me find her. Please. I... I’m losing my mind."
A long silence stretched on the other end.
Margaret Sullivan had never heard her son sound so broken.
"Let her go, Ethan. I’m begging you..."
"I can’t." His voice shook. "I won’t survive without her."
Only stifled sobs filled the line.
Margaret’s eyes welled up. If only she had...
"I’ll help you look."
But Sophia Williams had vanished without a trace.
A month later, Ethan was hospitalized for a severe stomach hemorrhage.
Meanwhile, Sophia was packing her bags, ready to leave for her next destination.
A knock sounded at her door.
Standing outside was a haggard Margaret.
"He’s in the hospital." She gave a bitter smile. "I didn’t dare tell him you were here."
Sophia’s expression turned icy.
"You have five minutes." She checked her watch. "My flight leaves soon."
Margaret handed her a phone. On the screen was a video—Ethan, gaunt and frail, an IV line taped to the back of his hand.
"He’s barely surviving on fluids..."
Sophia’s pupils constricted slightly.
Then, the phone rang.
"Mom, did you find her?" Ethan’s voice was terrifyingly weak.
Margaret looked at Sophia with pleading eyes.
After a long silence, Sophia finally spoke.
"Ethan..."
