Chapter 25
Chapter 25
"Ethan Sullivan, I gave you chances."
"But you never took a single one."
His fingers trembled, his voice choked with emotion. "Sophia... I know I was wrong—"
"So what?" Sophia sneered. "Will that bring my child back? Will it erase what you did with Victoria?"
"The moment I walked out of the Sullivan mansion, I never looked back."
She cast him a disgusted glance. "You make me sick."
Sophia checked her watch.
"Time's up. Goodbye."
"Don't go... Sophia, we had ten years—"
The door slammed shut, cutting off Ethan's desperate plea.
Margaret sighed. "She's gone."
The words stabbed into Ethan's heart like a blade.
Suddenly, he lunged forward in a frenzy.
The IV needle tore from his skin, blood beading at the puncture—but he felt no pain.
His weakened body gave out before he could take more than a few steps, sending him crashing to the floor.
When he woke again, he demanded to be discharged, locking himself inside the nursery.
He refused food or water, clinging to the remnants of what was lost.
Late that night, the door creaked open.
"Get out—"
Then he saw her.
Ethan scrambled forward, desperate. "Sophia! You forgive me, don’t you?" He crushed her in his arms. "I searched all of Riverstone for you—I was so close—"
"I brought you shrimp dumplings. Eat something, please?"
The woman opened the food container, lifting a bite to his lips.
He swallowed mechanically.
"Don’t torture yourself like this. It breaks my heart."
Ethan lifted his dazed gaze.
She looked so much like her.
More than Victoria ever had.
"Should I eat with you?"
As she stepped closer, Ethan snapped.
"Get away from me!" He shoved her violently out the door.
The woman shrieked in fright.
"Ethan!" Margaret rushed over. "Have you lost your mind?"
"Mother, how much more must you hurt me?" His eyes burned red. "Do you want to drive me to my grave?"
Margaret opened her mouth—then closed it.
The truth was... Sophia had already let you go.
But she couldn’t say it.
"You haven’t eaten in three days. I had no choice..."
Before she could finish, the door slammed in her face.
Margaret staggered back, steadying herself against the wall as tears streamed down her cheeks.
Inside, Ethan hunched over the sink, vomiting up the dumplings.
Then he collapsed in the corner, clutching the ultrasound report, slipping into a fitful sleep.
In his dream, he and Sophia had a daughter.
The little girl looked just like her, spoiled rotten by him.
But the one he cherished most was still Sophia.
The scene shifted to the day he proposed.
"Sophia, marry me." He knelt on one knee. "You’re the only one I’ll ever love."
Tears glistened in her eyes as she reached for him.
His hands shook so badly he fumbled with the ring, trying several times before it slid onto her finger.
He had rehearsed this moment endlessly—yet when it finally came, he wept like a fool.
Then, in an instant, the ring clattered to the floor.
The warmth in Sophia’s eyes turned to ice.
