Chapter 5
Chapter 5
The force sent me rolling across the floor, my limp body hitting the ground like a discarded rag doll. The baby in my arms was wrenched from my grasp, landing in the corner with a dull thud.
Dust swirled through the stale air, coating my blood-soaked body in a thick layer of grime. I must've looked like something out of a horror movie, mummified, lifeless.
Dr. James stood in the doorway, his expression darkening. But old habits kicked in. He crouched beside me, pressing two fingers to my neck. Checking for a pulse that wasn't there.
Alexander, however, didn't move past the threshold. He wrinkled his nose in disgust, covering it with his hand.
"What the hell is Lily doing? Why does this place stink like a damn slaughterhouse?"
The butler flinched but kept his head down, silent. His gaze flickered to Dr. James, as if waiting for him to speak first.
Dr. James pulled off his gloves with a slow, deliberate motion. His voice was heavy. "Mr. Frost… my condolences."
The room went still.
Alexander's fingers slipped from his nose. His eyes narrowed.
"…What condolences?"
He stepped forward, his presence suffocating as he loomed over Dr. James.
Dr. James didn't meet his gaze. Instead, he pointed at the lifeless body sprawled on the dusty floor.
"Your wife… she didn't make it. She died from childbirth complications."
Silence.
Then,
Laughter.
Sharp, biting laughter echoed through the attic, sending a chill down the butler's spine.
Alexander shook his head, a smirk curling his lips. "James… since when did you start screwing my wife?"
Dr. James stiffened.
Alexander's voice turned razor-sharp. "And what? That kid's yours too? Is that why she called you the second I locked her up? No wonder she tried to jump out the damn window, was that part of your escape plan?" His tone dropped, dripping with venom. "I treated you like a brother, and you fucked my wife behind my back?"
Before anyone could react, Alexander grabbed Dr. James by the collar, yanking him close, his eyes burning with fury.
Dr. James didn't back down. His own anger flared as he gritted out, "Are you even human? You locked her up! You let her die in labor, this is murder, Alexander!"
Alexander sneered. "Cut the act. What is this, some elaborate magic trick? A fake body to fool me while the real Lily runs free?"
Dr. James's expression flickered, a mix of frustration and disbelief, before his patience finally snapped.
Without warning, he swung.
His fist connected with Alexander's jaw in a brutal, bone-rattling hit.
The force sent Alexander staggering backward, straight onto the cold, bloodstained floor, right next to my corpse.
And that's when he saw me.
Dead eyes locked onto his. Unblinking. Accusing.
His breath hitched. Panic flickered in his expression as he scrambled upright, his hand brushing against something cold and metallic on the ground.
A necklace.
City-Toppling Love.
The one-of-a-kind necklace he had fought for at auction, the one he had given me as a symbol of our love.
I had torn it from my neck in my final moments, using the last shred of my strength to rip it away.
Alexander's chest rose and fell unevenly. His back hit the wall, eyes darting around wildly, until they landed on something else.
Scratch marks.
Deep, jagged scratches streaked across the wooden planks. Some still had bits of blood and flesh embedded in them.
For a brief second, something unreadable flickered across his face.
But then, he smirked.
It was cold. Calculated.
He swept a slow, scathing gaze over Dr. James and the butler.
"Not bad," he murmured. "A damn good performance."
He let out a dry laugh. "Let me guess. Lily promised you a cut of the Frost fortune? Told you that once she popped out the kid, she'd get her hands on my money and take care of you both?"
The butler paled. He shook his head frantically. "Mr. Frost, Madam never said anything like that! She, "
Alexander scoffed. "And to think, I actually believed her innocent act all these years." His voice was like ice. "I didn't see it, did I? How deep her ambition ran. But now? Now I see it clear as day."
His smile sharpened.
"But here's the thing, her schemes?" He leaned in slightly, voice dropping to a sinister whisper. "They're gonna fail."
He straightened, adjusting his cuffs as if nothing had happened. "Because the only way her child inherits the Frost fortune…" His smirk widened. "Is if she was still my wife."
The door creaked open.
Evelyn stepped in, her heels clicking against the floor.
"Brother Alex, did you, "
She froze. Her eyes landed on the lifeless body.
And then, she screamed.
