Chapter 4
Chapter 4
The butler swallowed hard, his voice trembling. "Madam... she's not breathing..."
A flicker of unease crossed Alexander's face, but just as quickly, he masked it with cold arrogance. "Acting! She's still acting! Let's see how long she can keep this up!"
He scoffed, his tone dripping with disdain. "She's survived worse in the wild. She can hold her breath underwater for over ten minutes! She's just playing you all because you don't know any better. Call my doctor, I want him to expose her little stunt in person."
The butler hesitated. "Mr. Frost, the children, "
"Who do you work for?!" Alexander snapped. "Who signs your paycheck, me or that woman?"
The butler sighed in resignation. "Yes, sir... I'll call him right away."
As he turned to leave, Evelyn slid closer to Alexander, her voice soft and sickly sweet. "Brother Alex, don't be mad. Stress isn't good for you."
She pressed against his arm, her lips curving into a knowing smile. "That woman, Lily, is just good at winning people over. It's only been three years, and she already acts like she owns this house."
Alexander's words cut through me like a blade, sharper than I ever imagined.
Three years. That's all it took for him to forget everything he once promised me.
On our wedding day, he had held my hands, eyes filled with love, and vowed, This is your home now. From now on, you'll be the only mistress of this house.
Tears blurred my vision.
Moments ago, I had foolishly thought that if Alexander found out I died giving birth to his children, he might feel a shred of regret. Maybe even a little guilt.
How pathetic. How utterly naive.
I actually believed him when he said he would love me forever.
Alexander and Evelyn had been childhood sweethearts, bound by an arranged marriage between their families. But when Evelyn learned she couldn't have children, she vanished overseas without a second thought, cutting all ties.
She had claimed she didn't want to ruin Alexander's future, that the Frost family needed an heir.
To escape the heartbreak, Alexander threw himself into wilderness expeditions. And that's where he met me. I was the team leader.
He told me I was strong. That I was his light in the darkness. That he knew, from the moment we met, we were meant to be.
And like a fool, I believed him.
After we married, he said the expeditions were too dangerous. He wanted me to stay home, to focus on starting a family. The Frost elders demanded an heir.
But Alexander had wrecked his body with years of drinking and self-destruction. I worked tirelessly to restore his health, to help him father the child his family so desperately wanted.
Three years later, I finally conceived twins. The Frost family was ecstatic, holding a press conference to announce that my children would be the rightful heirs of the Frost Group.
That was when Evelyn came back.
She returned with one simple statement: I don't care about the inheritance. As long as I can be with Alex, I'll be happy for the rest of my life.
And just like that, everything fell apart.
Alexander started staying out all night. He came home reeking of perfume, his crisp white shirts smeared with red lipstick, stains he didn't even bother to hide.
I asked for a divorce.
He laughed.
He told me the children in my belly belonged to the Frost family, that I wasn't going anywhere.
Then he moved Evelyn into our home.
She was sick, he said. She needed care, he said.
And because she couldn't stand the sight of a pregnant woman, he locked me, his wife, the mother of his children, inside the attic like I was nothing more than an inconvenience.
Alexander Frost deserves to burn in hell.
The doctor arrived quickly. Dr. James had been Alexander's personal physician for years, more of a friend than a doctor.
Alexander stood with his arms crossed, his eyes filled with contempt. "Lily, let's see how much longer you can fake this."
The door slammed open with a deafening crash.
