Chapter 2
Chapter 2
William was frozen, looking utterly stunned by my outburst, while Lucy, standing next to him, immediately started tearing up, acting all pitiful and wronged. And just like that, William's fuse blew.
"Tina, what the hell is wrong with you?" he snapped, eyes blazing. "What did Lucy ever do to you? And now you're laying hands on her? Seriously, have you lost it?"
I couldn't help but scoff, watching him wrap Lucy in his arms, like she was some fragile little thing. Who's the one with no shame here? I barely touched her, and he's treating her like she's the love of his life.
Ever since Lucy started interning at the hospital, William, my boyfriend, had been bending over backwards for her. Their constant flirtation made my stomach churn. I was done playing along. "If you care about her so much, why don't you two just be together? I'll gladly step aside. But today, this patient is not your responsibility."
His face turned bright red, his voice booming. "Tina, I'm calling you out on your bullying! You can't treat an intern like this! I'm your boyfriend, and I won't just stand by while you act like a psycho. Apologize to Lucy, now."
He glared at me, making it clear that if I didn't apologize, he wouldn't let it go. But honestly? I couldn't care less. I plopped back down at my desk and quickly started ordering the necessary tests for the patient. Screw their drama, this was about saving a life. The patient's health came first.
The moment the patient saw the bill for the tests, though, his eyes widened, and his voice went sharp. "What's going on here? It was just a few dozen bucks for medication, and now you're charging me hundreds for tests? Are you trying to scam me?"
Before I could even explain, William slammed his hand down on my desk like a man on a mission. "Tina, what are you doing? You're just trying to suck money out of this guy. That's illegal! Even if you're my girlfriend, I will report you for this."
Lucy, this angel in disguise, looked at me with her best innocent face. "Tina, so this is about me messing with your cash flow? You really think patients have money to throw away like that?"
The nerve of these two. I honestly couldn't believe how they'd twisted everything around. Lucy, playing the role of the saint? Disgusting. Her medical skills were a joke. She mistook a brain hemorrhage for a simple headache and didn't even bother to do basic tests. But here she was, acting like she was some kind of victim. I was ready to slap her right then and there.
But I didn't. I stayed calm, explaining to the patient that his symptoms were serious. This wasn't just a headache, it was potentially life-threatening. But the more I tried, the more defensive he got. "It's just a headache! Why are you making it sound like I'm dying?"
And of course, William had to make it worse. He shoved me aside with zero regard for professional ethics. "Move aside! You're going to ruin the hospital's reputation. Lucy, come treat him!"
I rolled my eyes. "She's an intern! She needs supervision. You're breaking the rules."
William shot back, his voice growing louder. "Rules? You want to talk about rules? I'm a doctor. I'm more than qualified to supervise Lucy. What's your problem?"
I wasn't shocked; this was just like last time. He'd said the exact same thing in my past life. But I kept my cool, giving him a cold stare. "And if something goes wrong, who is taking responsibility?"
Without skipping a beat, William's voice turned smug. "I'm the associate director. You think I can't handle the consequences?"
With that, he grabbed Lucy and started prescribing medication like he was the one in charge. I tried speaking up again, but they both talked over me, and even the patient joined in, cursing me out like I was the villain. It didn't matter how right I was, no one was listening.
I just gave up. They were going to twist everything no matter what. After they finished, the patient even threatened to report me, claiming I'd get fired. I just watched him leave, empty inside. Little did he know, that report might never even reach the authorities.
William, the hero of the day, turned to me with that self-righteous look on his face. "Apologize to Lucy right now, and if she forgives you, I'll pretend none of this happened."
The sheer audacity of his demand made me almost laugh. Ever since Lucy arrived, William had been at her beck and call, all because of her connections. I looked him dead in the eye and shot back, "Sorry, but if you like being a lapdog, that's on you. I'm not into it."
