Chapter 3
Chapter 3
William slapped me hard, and the sting spread across my cheek. "You really think I won't put you in your place just because you're my girlfriend?" His voice was low, menacing, his anger practically seething off of him.
Lucy, standing by his side, barely even tried to hide her glee. "Tina, how could you say something like that to William?"
My cheek burned, but I didn't flinch. Any feeling I had left for this man was long gone.
"I'll remember this slap," I muttered under my breath. "One day, you'll pay for it." Not just for this, but for everything he did to destroy my life in the past. He'd make me pay, but I'd make him regret it.
Lucy, her voice dripping with feigned sweetness, gasped dramatically, "Tina, how could you say that to me?" Her tears were like clockwork, the whole act nauseating.
I rolled my eyes. "What? Can't stand it when someone talks back? You're young, and instead of learning something useful, you're busy flirting with someone else's boyfriend? Don't you have any dignity?"
I spit on the floor for emphasis, disgust clear in my voice. "Just the sight of you makes me sick. Get lost."
Lucy's eyes filled with fresh tears, and she whimpered, "Tina, how could you say that to me?"
William was practically vibrating with fury now. "Tina, you need to get out of here. I'm reporting this to the director. Start packing your things because you're about to get fired."
With that, he dragged Lucy over to my desk like she was the new queen of the office.
"From now on, Lucy, this is your workspace."
It was obvious I was getting fired. But honestly? It didn't matter. I wasn't planning on sticking around. I gathered my things as William stood there, watching me like a smug little dictator.
"If you apologize to Lucy now, we might still be able to work something out," he said, his voice dripping with fake concern. "Maybe I'll forgive you."
"Forgive me?" I almost laughed out loud. "You really think I'm going to beg for your forgiveness? You're the last person I'd ever beg anything from."
I grabbed my bag and was just about to leave when the door suddenly slammed open, making me jump.
"There she is! She's the one who killed my husband! Give me back my husband!"
The woman's voice was full of rage as she and a group of people stormed in, shoving William out of the way like he was nothing. The room exploded in chaos.
I recognized the woman instantly. She was the patient's wife. In my past life, she had beaten me to death.
Her eyes locked onto Lucy. "You're the one who killed my husband!"
Lucy, clearly panicking, shouted, "You've got the wrong person! I'm just an intern! It was her, Tina, who treated your husband!"
The woman whirled around, her fury now directed at me. I could feel the weight of her gaze, the hatred in her eyes. The panic started creeping up my spine.
Just as I was about to make a run for it, the hospital security burst in, breaking up the scene before it got any worse.
The woman collapsed in tears, crying out in agony, "My husband had a brain hemorrhage, and she, she didn't run any tests! She just said it was a simple headache! My husband died because of her! She has to pay for this!"
Lucy and William both looked like ghosts, their faces draining of color as the gravity of the situation hit them.
The director stormed in, his face red with anger. "What the hell is going on here?"
The woman sobbed, her voice shaking. "My husband had a brain hemorrhage, and she didn't do anything! She killed him!"
Lucy's voice trembled as she pointed straight at me. "I'm just an intern. It's all Tina's fault!"
William quickly backed her up. "Yeah, I can vouch for that." He shoved me with a smug look on his face, then leaned in close and whispered, "Take the fall for this, and I won't hold it against you. Hell, I'll even stay your boyfriend."
I almost burst out laughing. In my past life, I'd fallen for his lies, and it cost me everything. My job, my life, everything. And now he thought I'd just give in again? Not a chance.
The director turned to me, eyes narrowed. "Is this true?"
Without missing a beat, I shook my head. "No, it's not. Lucy insisted on treating the patient. When I tried to stop her, William said he would take responsibility if anything went wrong. That's why we're here now."
Lucy was in full-on drama mode now, her voice full of fake outrage. "That's a lie! You're slandering me!"
William was furious, shouting, "Tina, what the hell is wrong with you? How can you pin this on Lucy? Do you have no shame?"
I couldn't help but smirk. The performance they were putting on was almost impressive. "And you? Don't you feel guilty when you lie like that?"
William glared at me, trying to look all righteous. "Tina, even though you're my girlfriend, this mess is your fault. The prescription was printed from your computer. That's proof."
Lucy, acting concerned now, added, "Tina, this is serious. You should apologize to the family. If not, you might end up in jail."
I was honestly amazed at how low they were willing to go. Last time, they framed me, and I paid the price. This time? Not a chance.
I walked over to the corner, grabbed my phone, and smiled. "Sorry, but I've got the whole thing recorded. If anyone's going to jail, it's you two."
